The result is that readers are dropped into Brunner’s imaginings of a man living near-future US with few signs or guideposts, and must think to catch up. The lighting, objects, and environment have been designed to reflect the aesthetics of the cyberpunk genre of the book. The mass of the public no longer has any contact with government; all they know is that if they step out of line they’ll be trodden on. I'm not usually a fan of the elliptical writing and shallow characterization typical of older sci-fi, and I'm not a huge fan of puns (wordplay is used liberally throughout as paragraph/scene titles), *but* I still enjoyed this book and wish I could give it 4.
