About this deal

It focuses on the exploits of three founding members: David Stirling (Connor Swindells), Robert Blair “Paddy” Mayne (Jack O'Connell), and Jock Lewes (Alfie Allen). But Operation Bigamy, a series of raids against Benghazi shortly before the battle of El Alamein, was another disaster. In the summer of 1941, at the height of the war in the Western Desert, a bored and eccentric young officer, David Stirling, has a vision for a new kind of war: attacking the enemy where they least expect it - from behind their own lines. As with all series based on true stories, some adjustments have had to be made for the real history to be brought to TV.

Your tolerance for SAS Rogue Heroes will depend on many things, from your sympathies towards the British army to your willingness to endure a rather Roger Cormanesque aesthetic palate. Steven uses that at the beginning of the first episode as a way to get inside the head of David Stirling who loved living life close to death. Once he left school, he chose to study law at Queen's University of Belfast, with the aim of becoming a solicitor. Reads like a mashup of The Dirty Dozen and The Great Escape, with a sprinkling of Ocean's 11 thrown in for good measure. Sure enough, Randolph wrote an account of the escapade and Stirling lunched with Churchill when he came to North Africa.SAS Rogue Heroes is based on the 2017 Ben Macintyre book Rogue Heroes: The History of the SAS, Britain's Secret Special Forces Unit That Sabotaged the Nazis and Changed the Nature of War.

It just means I have got a bit of room for manoeuvre, instead of trying to hone into something that is famously known. The SAS came of age in the campaign in Italy, where it was used as a more conventional raiding party, the Special Raiding Service, under the command of Paddy Mayne following Stirling’s capture in Tunisia in late 1942. Because he dealt with his grief differently, Ross asks that speculation regarding his sexuality be left out of the discussion. Gavin Mortimer wrote that the "main problem with Rogue Heroes is that it is true to David Stirling's version of how the SAS was born. I think within war you have real extreme versions of that and I get the impression that that’s what gets him going, focusing on the psychology of the sort of person it would take.

Banged Up 2023 cast: Meet the celebrities experiencing prison life first-hand, as the new Channel 4 reality show begins airing. It’s not always just about the gory act itself - sometimes it’s the act of the thrill that a certain kind of person will get from being in that kind of danger. It’s about one of the most intense and mysterious combat organisations that started in 1941 during Second World War in North Africa.

That was definitely one thing that really attracted me towards playing him - he was such a revered character in the SAS. I think what is interesting about all three key guys is that none of them fitted the military mould of that era. The organisation was the brainchild of two officers posted to the war in Egypt, David Stirling and John “Jock” Lewes. Encourage them to be as brilliant as they can be, and just enjoy watching that kind of magical thing. As for the suggestion in the series that Mayne was gay, Mortimer interviewed numerous SAS veterans and they all denied those rumours. My grandfather was a colonel when Algeria gained its independency in 1962, but was a captain under the French military. The six-part series – created and written by Peaky Blinders’ Stephen Knight, and based on the book by Ben Macintyre – tells the story behind the formation of the Special Air Service in North Africa. I give my perspective on Paddy’s story throughout this particular era of the war, the SAS and its origin. Indeed, the show’s portrayal of Mayne – as a boozed-up, violent and wild-man – lives up to his reputation, which, according to historian and author Gavin Mortimer, was largely crafted by David Stirling. He fights for permission to recruit the toughest, boldest and brightest soldiers for a small undercover unit that will create mayhem behind enemy lines.
