About this deal

Matilda's best friend Lavender is just as brave and kind-hearted as she is, and isn't afraid to go toe to toe with Miss Trunchbull. Though Roald Dahl’s character Matilda is gendered as female, Styles purposefully does not assign a label to the person he sings to. While the book doesn't go too much into detail about the characters' appearances, the 1996 film gives us lots of outfits to choose from.

Designer Rob Howell created this typical British school uniform for five-year-old Matilda in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s award-winning musical, based on Roald Dahl’s 1988 children’s book. Matilda's typical British winter school uniform with its pleated skirt, blazer, felt hat, socks and Start-Rite shoes, has been worn by dozens of girls playing the precocious and tenacious character, and Matilda's appearance in this costume has become an iconic image of the show, featuring on several of its posters and on publicity material. We've put together our favourite easy Matilda costume ideas, so you and your kids can celebrate the world of books in style on the day. You'll need: a dark blazer and skirt, a white shirt with a red tie, a thick belt (ideally leather), big black boots, and some eyeliner for the monobrow. This is probably an easier costume to put together if your kid wants to play the big bad Headmistress of Crunchem Hall. Harry Styles spoke to Zane Lowe about his new album ‘Harry’s House’ days before its release, talking through his new songs, his rise to stardom in One Direction, his nail range Pleasing, and how he spent the past two years. After all, it's about getting involved more than having the most accurate outfit, so have some fun being your favourite Matilda character! You'll need: White or pale yellow shirt (with thin vertical stripes for extra accuracy) with short sleeves or rolled-up long sleeves, black school trousers, school shoes, and a whole mess of brown paint and facepaint for the chocolate stain. White shirt, 65% polyester and 35% cotton, with collar and six pearl buttons sewn into the proper right placket to simulate button fastening, but with six metal poppers sewn inside for speed of changing.

Many of these costumes work as well for adults as they do for kids, and if you don't have quite everything suggested for the costume you'll probably still get away with it. As well as talking through new songs ‘ Satellite’ and ‘ Daydreaming’, Harry spoke about ‘Matilda’ – a song fans can’t help but wonder who inspired it. The blazer has three button holes, two grey buttons (middle button lacking), and is piped with maroon, green and white twisted piping. Bonus props: A slice of chocolate cake (you might want to craft one out of cardboard if you don't want it to go mysteriously missing).I think “Matilda” is kind of self-explanatory […] I like that it was this personal story to me about someone else, being able to say, “This thing is more important than me just making music about myself, because I think it could mean more to you and a lot more people” […] I played it for a couple of friends, and all of them cried. Bonus props: a brown leather satchel, a fingerless black glove on the left hand, and a net full of large round balls of kitchen foil (shot puts). Produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the show opened at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon on 9 December 2010, intended as a Christmas show running until 30 January 2011. It has won a host of awards including seven 2012 Olivier Awards - at the time the greatest number of such awards ever won by a single show.

You'll need: Purple or dark blue dungarees, a light pink t-shirt, round pink-rimmed glasses, with hair braided in a crown tilted towards the back of the head. It’s a weird one, because with something like this, it’s like, ‘I want to give you something, I want to support you in some way, but it’s not necessarily my place to make it about me because it’s not my experience. I believe as a print designer you are a raconteur, and here at Cath Kidston we always like to tell stories with our prints. If you're looking for more brilliant and simple ideas for costumes this World Book Day, take a look at the stories below.
