About this deal

Autofocus is just about instantaneous on my EOS R5. It's so fast that I compared how fast my own eyes could focus from 3 feet (1m) to infinity), and the 70-200 & R5 combination are faster!

Optical Image Stabilization (OIS or IS) works great. I get perfect sharpness most of the time hand-held, standing with no bracing, most of the time at 1/8 at 70mm and 1/15 at 200mm.Bokeh, the quality of out-of-focus areas as opposed to the degree of defocus, is great wide-open at 200mm, becoming neutral as stopped down. I see four stops of real-world improvement, and not quite as good as on the EOS RP with no in-body stabilization. Bokeh, the feel or quality of out-of-focus areas as opposed to how far out of focus they are, is great. First among them is perception. Bluntly, lenses that extend as they zoom are generally kit lenses –so it feels a bit out of place for a premium L-series lens to feature the same mechanism as cheaper lenses that come bundled with cameras. See Is It Worth It and Should You Upgrade. If you deserve the best or shoot for a living, of course you need this, but if you're a student, of course you don't.

The RF 70-200/2.8 has only minor distortion: mild barrel at 70mm, none around 100mm and mild pincushion from 135~200mm. That's about it. Canon makes this clear: get this if you want an easy-to-carry high quality tele zoom and can forego .

It comes with a strap to thread through its two side attachments if you want to sling it around your shoulder. The lens isn't big or heavy enough to need a tripod collar; I just attach my camera to the tripod and I'm good. Of course that's just me; do what you want; just don't use this lens for years hand-held with the collar in your way. If this 1,200×900 pixel crop is about 6" (15cm) wide on your screen, the complete image would print at a huge 27½×41¼″ (70×105 cm) at this same high magnification. This is as close as it gets with a 1.6x camera. It will be less close with a 1.3x or full-frame camera. More at Crop Factor.

If you're worrying about this lens' sharpness, you're probably not a seasoned full-time pro. This, and all Nikon's previous 80-200mm and 70-200mm lenses, have been the standards against which all other professional zooms have been judged for many, many decades. Focus breathing (the image changing size as focused) is mostly of interest to cinematographers who don't want the image changing size ("breathing") as the lens is focused among different subjects. The Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L is made to Canon's top professional standards, exactly like their 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. ED: Magic Extra-low Dispersion glass for reduced secondary chromatic aberration (sharper pictures). L-series construction, designed to withstand the rigours of professional use. Protective seals guard against dust and moisture Manual focusing is entirely electronic; the manual focus ring isn't connected to anything other than a digital encoder. For normal, three dimensional subjects, like people, it's very sharp, and you'd never notice a problem. Here's an example:
