There are plenty of battles that really show the grotesque nature of the medieval ages and the horrors of war have never been depicted this way before in any manga I know of. Often times the fight scenes are a bit exaggerated similar to the manga adaptation of Battle Royale.

For one, contrary to the manga, the Jomsvikings actually didn't give a shit about Norse religion and culture, and together with King Harald they brutally forced christianity in Scandinavia. The story is set during the golden age of the Vikings (11th century) particularly during the invasion of England. The main story is about Thorfinn's quest to avenge his father's death by defeating Askeladd (his father's murderer) in an honorable duel and he plans to accomplish this by working for him and doing whatever Askelad asks and in return he is granted a chance to kill him in an honorable duel. The story however is I'm rubbing my head at this one. This is the longest review I've ever written, and I'm devoting this much time and effort to it because I truly care about Vinland Saga. I want the series to continue be good, because it was good. I've binge-read nearly 190 chapters of manga in a week, and the question left on my mind is: My breath was taken away from me. After the absolutely awful War in the Baltic Sea sub-arc, the LITERAL TITLE OF THE ARC, "EASTERN EXPEDITION ARC," is ripped out from beneath us. It's boiled down to they got to Miklagrad, sold the horns, made gold, the end. Nothing else happened. The protagonist of Vinland Saga, Thorfinn sun of Thors, is one of those Vikings. Only with revenge on his mind he travels from battle to battle, day in, day out.
