About this deal

NB: I'm aware that a lot of people enjoyed this book but it just wasn't for me, so please don't hate me. I like to think that I'm a nice person) Generally speaking, an ossuary is anything from a small box to a large building that contains human bones. This book is heavily influenced by Welsh mythology, which was new for me! I’m more familiar with British, Celtic, Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Norse folklore, so I jumped at the chance to experience Welsh for the first time. Now, I have no idea how to pronounce these names, but I loved the various creatures of Welsh folklore and all of the Welsh names. It gave the story such an authentic vibe. There’s just something about Wales that’s always been so spooky to me. I’ve read enough tales of ghost hauntings and supernatural sightings in Wales that the author couldn’t have chosen a more perfect setting for this book.

Cab Bolton comes to Door County to unravel the mystery of Glory's death, but that's not the only secret Door County is hiding. Slayton may be highly unusual in the events which have shaped it, but it has provided a refuge for many and there are reasons why someone would want to hide themselves in a town like this, both good and bad. Sarah's experiences as a police officer in Slayton are put to the test in the first investigation that she is heading, where everyone from her new boss to the much admired forensic expert bought in to assist has their eyes firmly on her.

It might seem obvious, or maybe not, but the overwhelming theme of THE BONE HOUSES, a story of a curse, magic, and reanimated dead, is grief. Of letting go of the past, whether that be from a loss or from a hurt or from an unknown beginning, and moving forward. Living. I suspect the bone-storing area, probably in this format, was in the same vicinity, as far away from the church as possible, within the boundary of the oldest part of the churchyard. Really enjoying this series. The atmosphere of the town is creepy, the plot rather dark, and the characters are full of surprises. I love Sarah, her compassion, her drive, her character. Not to mention, all the Welsh folklore, the Halloween spooky vibes, our dear BONE GOAT the loyal protector, and the audiobook with its British/Welsh accented narration that’s just so splendidly done. The Bone Houses has mastered the art of being original and unique—at least to a degree.

What's the problem? You'll keep me safe, won't you? You're big and strong. No one's going to mess with you." Mark didn't feel vulnerable to her, but he remembered what Hilary had told him about teaching teenaged girls. You think they're kids. They're not. He wanted this encounter to be over. He wished he had never gotten out of bed and never taken a walk on the beach. Nothing good could come from being here with Glory. As he got closer to the girl on the beach, Mark couldn't help but admire her. Her body was mature, and the flimsy strings of the red bikini showed it off, but she still had the gangly gait of an adolescent, all arms and legs. She was more girl than woman, with an innocence about her near nakedness in public. He was still too far away to see her face, but he wondered if his wife, Hilary, knew her. He assumed she was one of the girls who had competed in the dance tournament at the resort, and now that the competition was over, she was enjoying a few sleepless moments on the beach before going home. You shouldn't brag about that," he said, before he could stop himself. He didn't want to lecture her or be drawn into a discussion of her sexuality. He just wanted to turn around and go. Things were getting out of control. The Bone Houses is a highly creative and engaging YA Dark Fantasy story. I loved the characters and the escalation of the plot over the course of the book.I really enjoyed the characters and felt that just the right number of suspects/witnesses /secondary characters were introduced to keep me guessing but not too many that I got confused. The twists were great and I didn’t see them coming but they also weren’t so out there that they were completely unbelievable. All in all I do recommend this book if you enjoy a good fast paced detective thriller, especially if you also enjoy some supernatural subplots thrown in! Sarah is a dedicated cop with a potential romantic angle towards her partner Richie. She forms strong friendships and these help her to make a difference to the community. Sarah is kind and caring yet also brave and determined. I liked the strength of her character and was rooting for her to uncover the truth. Meanwhile Cora is vulnerable and damaged so I wanted her to find peace and move away from her past. Oh, come on." She was a coquette again. Her moods changed like clouds passing over the moon. "I won't bite. Unless you're into that."
