About this deal

Seagull has faithfully remade this 1960s piece - albeit with a larger 40mm case. They’ve taken an iconic aviation watch and recreated it down to the smallest details. Everything is straightforward. As it should be. A clean dial, with slim and legible numbers. A touch of colour - the blue hands - and a plain round case. All finished off with an unpretentious leather strap. As I mentioned, the original project 304 featured the Seagull ST3 in it. However it has since been updated to the ST19. As the name and text “19 ZUAN” on the dial indicates, it has 19 jewels. This isn’t as obvious a choice as the 1963 chronograph. But it is another brilliant vintage-inspired piece from Seagull. We cannot guarantee delivery times during busy periods as much of it comes down to factors outside of our control. However, in normal circumstances, we have the following delivery times:

I’ll admit it. Seagull manufactures some uninspiring fashion watches. But as I’ve demonstrated, they also design and make some excellent models. I’m especially taken with the two military remakes and the Ocean Star. This classic model of the watch (Seagull 1963, 38mm) comes with domed acrylic glass that matches the original Seagull 1963 the best. Other models (Seagull 1963,38mm & Seagull 1963, 40mm) have a more modern and higher scratch resistant sapphire crystal. The curvature of this sapphire glass is minimal, which is in line with the rest of the modern look. It’s a modern automatic watch, again powered by an in-house Seagull movement. Although it isn’t a legitimate diver - the water resistance is only 50M - it does have decent specs. The Tianjin Sea-Gull Watch Group, commonly referred to as simply “Seagull,” is one of the biggest watch manufacturers in China by volume. If you thought that all Chinese watches were cheap pieces or fakes, stop. Look at those five Seagull watches again. These are undoubtedly quality watches. In the 1960’s Venus needed more space for the caliber 188 chronograph movement. They put the rights, plans, and machinery necessary to manufacturer their older model, the caliber 175, up for sale. The company, founded in 1958 as Tianjin Wuyi Watch Factory, has over 50 years of experience in the business. An early pioneer in Chinese watchmaking, Seagull’s ST5 is the very first watch movement to be 100% built and designed in China.

The Tank Commander is up there among my top Chinese watches. It’s unashamedly Chinese and references their military history. It’s a great alternative to the 1963 chronograph if you want something more rugged. It’s well-made but still feels like an old piece. If you like vintage but don’t want to buy a used watch with unknown origins, you can’t go wrong with the Seagull 1963. It’s also a watch for history lovers and watch collectors alike. All things considered, I was satisfied with this watch. It works for me. And it’s very affordable. Particularly if you factor in the in-house mechanical movement. You’d pay significantly more for a German equivalent. The Dual Time is a reasonably chunky watch with a 42mm case. This has the trademark double crowns of a Super Compressor style watch. In this model, the second crown rotates an inner bezel that records a second time-zone - making this is a GMT watch. The information on the dial is variable, like the number of jewels is written in Chinese ’19 ZUAN;’ but there is a sign中国制造which means ‘Made in China.’ Movement The stainless steel Seagull 1963 is available in different sizes: 38mm, 40mm and 42mm. Its length is 14mm. The top finish is polished and gives the watch a classic finish. Despite its vintage appearance it’ll therefore retain the looks/quality for longer. The bezel is well designed with a small rounding, thus providing the best viewing possibly from different angles. This chunky piece has a deep blue bezel and a matching sunburst dial. Along with the white contrasting hands and indices, the effect is of a very clear dial. It’s easy to read. There’s also a cyclops lens above the date window. All very practical.

This is the most widely available Seagull watch. It’s been a real success in the West and I love mine. It wasn’t my first Seagull watch, but it is my favourite. As well as the reliable automatic movement, there is a sapphire crystal and a substantial stainless steel bracelet. If you’re a fan of The Slender Wrist, you probably want to know if this watch will fit a smaller wrist. Rest at ease — with 38 mm, 40 mm and 42 mm diameter versions, Seagull’s got us small wrist dudes covered. I do not have experience with other straps from Seagull, but the watch is an ultimate strap monster. You can change the straps if you want to find the best. Spoiler alert, it will work on most. Pros and Cons It was in Seagull’s factory that the first complete Chinese watch was designed and built. They’ve since stopped producing quartz models and have built mechanical watches exclusively since the late 90s’This makes it possible to admire and study a mechanical chronograph movement without opening the watch. Dial and Hands

I got the 38mm model and, after receiving it in the mail, I asked a few of my friends to try it on. Believe me, it looks great on any wrist size from 15 cm to 19 cm (5.9 to 7.5 inches). (For reference, my wrist measures 17.5cm, or 6.9 inches, around). In my opinion, these reissue watches are all “copies” of the original, so I wouldn’t worry about this. Just enjoy this bit of Chinese watchmaking history on your wrist. Initial Thoughts Beginning in the mid-1950s, China began to build watches based on Swiss designs. Out of this, emerged the ‘ big three’ factories - Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin . Although the USSR was not interested, China was. After purchasing the caliber 175, the Chinese government assigned the Tianjin Watch Factory to develop a reliable watch for airforce pilots. The design is distinctive and clearly Chinese. The straightforward round case and simple pushers are typical of the period and reminiscent of other chronographs of the time. The Seagull ST19 movement is a beautiful column wheel chronograph which is a must-have for collectors. The movement is a hand winding Seagull ST1908 mechanical chronograph with a frequency of 21,600 bph and a power reserve of approximately 42 hours on a full wind without the ST19 chronograph running.
