About this deal

Steaming: Here a wallpaper steamer can be used to soften the Artex, which can then be scraped away from the current plasterboard. Please note, you should not over soften the Artex or this will liquify and make a considerable mess. Artex is still used today but without asbestos. This has made Artex containing asbestos harder to identify as it is indistinguishable from today’s safe Artex. This is why having the material tested is so essential. The only way to be 100% sure of the content of your Artex textured coating is to have a sample taken and sent off for analysis. Work with textured decorative coatings will not normally be licensable work, as work with this material will usually not meet the conditions in the definition of licensable work in regulation 2(1).”

The process for dealing with asbestos in Artex will depend on the condition of the material and the location where it is found. Most testing of Artex for asbestos ‘events’ would generally form part of an ‘ asbestos survey’ on a property. Chemical removal: A common chemical used is X-Tex. This gel softens the old Artex which can then be removed by scraping, leaving the old plasterboard exposed and ready for new plaster to be applied. Always err on the side of caution and ensure any aspects of a property you work on are tested for asbestos. This is a legal requirement in the UK on all properties built before 2000 when asbestos was finally banned in the UK. We’ll start with Artex itself as they were the most popular brand during the asbestos heyday. As a General Rule of Thumb:

How to tell if Artex has asbestos

Once a textured coating has hardened, there’s no way to tell if it contains asbestos just by looking at it or by touch. Also, many of the fibres in old Artex coatings look very similar to harmless fibres that can be found in safe, modern products. How Can I be 100% Certain My Artex Ceiling Doesn’t Contain Asbestos? In fact, despite the name Artex having become somewhat synonymous with textured coatings in general, various similar trade products exist, including ‘Wondertex’, ‘Suretex’, ‘Newtex’, ‘Pebblecoat’ and ‘Marblecoat’. Although Artex was also offered in a non-asbestos-containing form from 1976, asbestos-containing Artex continued to be produced in the UK until 1984 and was still being installed well into the late 1990’s. One of the most important facts to know about Artex is that it can contain asbestos. Therefore, if you have a property that contains Artex then you can find out if it contains asbestos by using our asbestos Artex testing service. What is Asbestos Artex?

You can do this yourself if part of the material has already broken off or if there’s no chance of the asbestos contaminating the home. Otherwise, you should get an accredited person or company to do it for you. Firstly a trained asbestos surveyor would safely obtain a small sample of the material – it will typically be the size of a 50p coin – and then it will be sent or taken to a testing laboratory for examination. The sample will then be inspected under a microscope to assess for the presence of asbestos. While Artex (the company) stopped using asbestos in the mid-1980s, other manufacturers may have continued to use it up until 1999. If your home was constructed prior to 1985 the textured coating is very likely to contain asbestos. NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Ulster Bank, which are all part of the NatWest Group, will now shut at least 172 of their bank branches in 2023 and 2024.Artex ceilings completed before 1985 will almost certainly contain asbestos and those added between 1985 and 2000 may still do so.

That’s why we would always recommend using a competent, trained and experienced asbestos surveyor to attend to your property to collect the suspect asbestos material. Here at Acorn Analytical Services, our asbestos surveyors are fully trained, quality audited and accredited under our UKAS Accredited to undertake Artex Asbestos Testing. However, you should bear in mind that if this route is taken, the asbestos will remain in situ underneath. As a consequence, it will be necessary for any future works – such as drilling – to be performed in a controlled manner to ensure harmful fibres are not released. If your Artex contains asbestos, it is in a good condition and can remain undisturbed then it will be quite safe to leave in place. If the material is deteriorating or damaged, then you may need to get the materials either repaired or removed. Both employees and self-employed workers will pay less in National Insurance from next year, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has announced in today's Autumn Statement. Only sure way is get it tested so do that. Do you have different patterns in the house? Was there paper on the ceilings which still remains under the light fittings as diy people tend not to remove light to remove paper.
