There are two main philosophies when it comes to add-on suspension stems. On the one hand, you have models like the Cirrus Cycles Kinekt, which uses a parallelogram-style linkage that maintains a constant handlebar angle throughout the range of travel, but at the expense of weight, complexity, and bulkiness. More common is the single-pivot approach. Here, the bar angle changes as the stem moves, but the format is much lighter, simpler, and compact. Once you determine the length of your existing stem round to the nearest 10 mm and choose the closest match. A preload adjusting plug in the base of the seatpost tunes the suspension. Numbers one to five are printed within its thread pitch and relate to rider weight and the spring(s). Turn the preload plug to the required position and fit the post. The stem came with the elastomers fitted for a 6 deg rise, to reverse and get a 6 deg drop you also need to move the elastomers to the top, no big deal and this is made very clear in the instructions. Most seatposts have the diameter printed somewhere near the bottom of the post. You'll need to remove the seatpost from the bike frame (mark your existing seatpost height with a bit of tape before you remove it so you can replace it easily), and look for a number like 27.2, 30.9, or 31.6 (etc.). That is the diameter of the post. The Freeqence uses an elastomer-spring setup with 30mm of travel, which can be adjusted to accommodate riders from 50kg through to 120kg. While coil-spring stems like the Kinekt are highly reactive over fast bumps, the Freeqence should feel a bit more ‘muted’ in comparison, as the properties of elastomers have more inherent damping. The other main option to compare against would be an increased tyre size, which can also increase comfort when set at suitable pressures. Well fortunately Redshift have updated the suspension stem for something more reliable, lightweight and adjustable.In general, you'll find the +30 deg stem provides a more upright, comfort-oriented fit, whereas the +/-6 deg stem puts you in a more performance-oriented riding position (standard for a typical road bike). The small unweighted saddle height increase needs a slight adjustment when mounting up for the first time. At the suggested preload setting, I immediately felt neutrally suspended and didn’t notice any negative effect on seated pedalling.
