Research-wise I used movies, documentation, I read up on as much as I could. Obviously, you don't have access to any videos or recordings because they didn't exist. What I like, is you can look at pictures and it's a snapshot but you don't know what happened before or after. So it's already the beginning of the creative work of the actor, to imagine. It’s all so brilliantly staged, superbly filmed and put together. None more so than a scene towards the end of the second episode. There’s some debate as to whether the body found in the park died by his own hand or by another, and after Bertillon and his adversary Docteur Socquet argue the toss in front of a crowd in the Bois de Boulogne, the former drives off in his new-fangled motorcar, only to plough straight into a horse.

Some scenes in “Paris Police 1900” are shot from no perceptible character point of view, or straight into window or door light, silhouetting the characters, comic book style. How much of a graphic novel sensibility carries over into the series?
