A number of attractions are close by, including Haweswater Reservoir, which offers a variety of treks, and Keld Chapel, a National Trust property. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them. It’s a novel that provoked a wide range of responses, and it’s worth going and reading some of the reviews that Niall Harrison lists here, as well as Nick Hubble’s excellent piece from Vector 258.

It takes place in a bleak post-capitalist Britain in which the population has been rounded up into closely-policed urban centers, made dependent on foreign aid for subsistence, and given meaningless factory jobs. At what point are the most radical options—the ones totally outside our comfort zones—the best choice, the most moral choice? Outside provides an enclosed lawned garden and gravelled area with furniture and a gas barbecue, as well as private parking and an external games room. Looking back at it now, The Carhullan Army seems even more timely, more urgent than when it was first published 10 years ago. It is really a political novel, but seen right up close, through Sister’s eyes, which is, of course, the most feminist way politics can be seen.

Is a perfect choice - that was the title of a magazine targeted at teenaged British girls featuring enthusiastic coverage of the latest six day wonder pop-star sensation and that kind of thing (view spoiler) [ unfortunately it is a very specific reference, I wonder if this and the Cumbrian setting account for so many of the low rating on Goodreads, this is a book that will make most sense to you if you have lived a long time in Britain and are of a certain age (hide spoiler)]. A sophisticated SF story, in the sense that the author is developing or challenging established SF ideas. I wonder why almost all books set in the future are dystopian – can anyone think of a utopian novel written recently? Here, the harshness of circumstances are mirrored by the wildness of the moorland in which the women live'.

It brought a gentle ache to my chest to have her hug me at the end of a dinner shift and then walk away to her bed, or rest a hand on my shoulder and ask if I was faring OK when she saw my cuts and bruises, my newly shaved head…Shruti held back, as I did. It’s very well-written (and refreshingly short), but in the end it’s just not quite as good as two other novels on the shortlist. The narrator sees herself in the mirror towards the close of the book - and she no longer recognises herself, her nature has been nurtured through tough mothering into something foreign to her, she has become her own anima. Fionnuala wrote: "You certainly make this dystopia sound more interesting to me than Atwood's Gilead, Jan-Maat. The women have meetings to discuss communal issues; they sing songs; they have a foul-mouthed rough friendliness and camaraderie, but these scenes aren’t whimsical.

Following its union with the United States and a series of disastrous foreign wars, Britain is in the grip of a severe crisis; the country is now under the control of The Authority. This charming community, Bampton in the Eden District of Cumbria, is nestled in the scenic Lowther valley and within reaching distance of the River Lowether.

The Carhullan Army presents a bleak dystopian vision of an England run by a police-like authoritarian regime, and while it may sound as though it’s all doom and gloom, I think that there is an element of hope in the narrative as well. It has the same sense of place as to be found in Alan Garner (I could easily picture where the novel is set).

I liked this one a lot more than other dystopian books like Station Eleven, in which it bothered me that all these people lived around the Great Lakes, yet no one seemed concerned about preparing for winter. despite the loss of the original roof structure, the interest of the barn is enhanced by evidence of a former domestic dwelling at its north end and the incorporation of early domestic doors and windows. Both works feature the rise of an authoritarian (in V explicitly Fascist) government in England, in response to disaster.Even on the Beacon Hill above Rith I could see people moving in the streets and I knew they were close by. Hall uses, judiciously, some Celtic dialect, which makes Carhullan seem slightly ancient and exotic even though it is in the future. They were a strange group, slightly exotic, slightly disliked […] Their dress was different, unconventional; often they wore matching yellow tunics that tied at the back and came to the knee […] They were always friendly towards other women, joking with them over the wicker trays of radishes and cucumbers, giving out discounts and free butter. Here in the empty Lakeland village I couldn’t have explained to anyone exactly how secure I felt, even if there had been someone around to listen to me. Britain after its union with the United States and numerous unsuccessful foreign wars, has found itself in the grip of a severe fuel crisis and the country is now under the control of a severe body known as The Authority.
