About this deal

In his view, the book isn't perfect "but it is certainly helpful", not least as it covers the First and Second Ages.

It works very well as a companion book, raising questions that can then be more thoroughly explored through the reading of more of Tolkien's works. Full-color maps are featured throughout, charting the shape of ARDA from its creation to the events of the THIRD AGE. You can read more about Tolkien himself, and his book – The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun in my book review that can be found here: Book Review: The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun (J. A final chapter looks at geographic themes such as climate, vegetation, population, and languages around Middle-earth. When one actually reads this book, they will not find an atlas, as this is very much lacking in maps. And in 1984, Day wrote Castles, the first of five books in collaboration with the Academy Award winning artist, Alan Lee. Page 144: In the upper-right inset, the cleft of the brazen gate (which appears in the upper-left inset) is not depicted. But it's perfect for picking it up from time to time, marveling at its paintings and looking up facts and useful information. Much of the first few pages is Day telling the readers that this will encorage them to dive deeper and whatnot, it is repeated no less than 5 times with near identical wording.

However, the published Silmarillion uses "Dor Daedeloth" (Land of the Shadow of Horror) as the name for the northern lands under the control of Morgoth without distinguishing the regions north and south of the mountains. Incorporation of these names and places on equal footing with those from later in the legendarium's evolution is questionable, but Fonstad seems to have been aware of the potential issues and explicitly notes in the accompanying text the speculative nature of the maps of the Undying Lands.R. Tolkien’s fictional universe is as vast as the human imagination, so an atlas is a helpful tool to get around. You'd be forgiven for thinking that this book is purely full of illustrations and snippets of info about Middle Earth and the greater land of Arda, but it is so much more.

Remarkables REMARKABLES Intriguing, stunning, or otherwise remarkable books These include fine editions, foreign publications that are exceptional for their interest or production, special editions and some first-rate books from very small publishers. There are also (very bad) charts and genealogies that are tangential at best, some of which deviate from the ones that Tolkien supplied!

Through beautiful full-page ILLUSTRATIONS of the key places and events of Tolkien's world, this book tells the story of how the COUNTRIES and PEOPLES of Middle-Earth came to be. He gives as an instance the work that she did to make the journey of Thorin's company in The Hobbit consistent with the map, something that Tolkien found himself unable to do.While the book is informative, it does gloss over many things, and with it being such a quick read, it should only take two or three days to read this. The edition may seem a bit superfluous, but there’s some good information in here along with some glorious artwork.
