About this deal

The only thing i’d wish it did was to be able to open up the front completely so that you could lie on your front and look out. Today, we’re going to delve into the world of solo camping and review a product that promises to make your solo adventures more comfortable and convenient: the OEX Salamanda Bivi Bag. is completely overkill for a pack, a 40l pack should be fine but would still be pushing it for hand luggage. Easy to put up, lots of room inside (I’m 5’9″ and a side sleeper), the poles are short enough that they’ll pack into my frame bag, meaning the bivi itself can pack smaller, or I can roll my matt into it and it’ll still fit in it’s bag. Cooking in the vestibule is possible in dry weather with door tied back and sleeping with mesh zipped round was great overnight (no rain) plenty length ,rucksack went at feet with no problem ,I’m 5 ft 9.

The bivi bag is compatible with the OEX Expedition Tarp and the Bush Tarp Pro, allowing you to expand your shelter if needed. the OP mentioned ‘stealth’ which is where a hooped bivi wins over a tarp or a tent in having a more minimal presence than either of them, very useful if you’re riding then cheeky camping wherever you can find. With the front rain cover open and the mozzy net zipper down, there was a nice breeze flowing through. I could be wrong as I have never actually been there, but my impression is there will be extended stretches without suitably spaced pairs of trees at all.

Set up for the first time in the dark on a stealth camp and recommended be a fine gent, the English Woodsman. The Lanshan 1 allows more traditional camping and isn't heavier or much more expensive than the Oex Salamanda. However, they may not be the best choice for those who prefer more spacious accommodations or are camping in very humid conditions. It offers good protection from the elements, although it may be a bit heavy for those looking for a truly lightweight shelter.

It’s a piece of gear I’d recommend to any solo camper looking for a compact and easy-to-pitch shelter. I am also not clear on the legal restrictions to fastening a hammock to local trees in each of the nine-plus jurisdictions I will be travelling through, how strictly this is enforced, and what the penalties are. A mate of mine has the 2 person version of this ("Telemark 2") which I've used and it was fantastic. If they do get aggressive, the best thing is to stand your ground, pick up a stone and raise your arm as if to throw it.It was OK on its own but when I added a sleeping mat and sleeping bag there was hardly any space left. I would still choose a mid+inner over tarp+bivvy though, because I find enclosed bivvys claustrophobic and if they have mesh uppers mosquitoes will still annoy you anyway.
