About this deal

Robin’s entire experience of going undercover was very well done - I found the spiral in Robin’s thoughts and experiences really harrowing and yet a very clear glimpse into how power and control is executed in the setting of a cult.

On top of this is a culture of sexual control of women in the cult, where personal relationships are prevented, and sexual coercion is routine, justified by removing the “hindrance” of personal relationships. Charlotte Campbell Ross – Strike's ex-girlfriend who is currently married and mother to twin toddlers.Without an obvious murder really driving the plot, it's an interesting story challenge for the series. The previous story, The Ink Black Heart, looked at how a public figure was “cancelled” for being anti-trans. There is no sign that this is Galbraith's first novel, only that he has a delightful touch for evoking London and capturing a new hero.

The first plot (which is the plot of the series, as opposed to any particular book) is the Strike/Robin romance. While the cases in each book are always resolved by the end, the relationship between Strike and Robin remains open-ended, continuing to evolve with each book but without the romantic resolution that would seem to be where it is headed. I think it helped that it was “pure prose” to untangle - it didn’t have the tarot reading from TB and the online conversations from IBH - so the prose was so much smoother and the plot so much easier to follow. On the surface, they seem to be peaceful organization which gives a lot to the poor through charity work performed by its members. The details of the cult are horrible, with members forced to do manual labour, starved, subjected to physical punishment and sexually exploited by higher-level cultists and leaders.

While I am also a big fan of Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books and own them all, I have not found re-reading them to be as completely riveting as the “Cormoran Strike” series. He has also established contact with Prudence, another of his numerous half-sisters¹, as well as navigating the complexities of his relationship with his sister Lucy, who also spent time at the Chapman Farm site with Strike as children, before it was used by the UHC. Anti-trans people have claimed to speak for women when they rile against the trans community, alleging that lesbians are being “erased” by transgender people. Strike and Robin remain solid, convincingly drawn characters – the best duo in detective fiction since Reginald Hill’s Dalziel and Pascoe – however garrulous their biographer has become.Das Buch hat auch deswegen so viele Seiten, weil Rowling wieder einmal Dialoge unnötig verlängert und künstliche Streitigkeiten eingebaut hat. When she was a young teenager, her great aunt, who Rowling said "taught classics and approved of a thirst for knowledge, even of a questionable kind," gave her a very old copy of Jessica Mitford's autobiography, Hons and Rebels.

For those who don’t know about these books at all, Cormoran Strike is an ex-military man with an prosthetic leg — his leg was injured in a blast and had to be amputated, forcing him to leave the army — who has started a detective agency. Early on, we are encouraged to think that the time he, his mother, and his sister Lucy spent at Aylemerton will play a bigger role in the more immediate plot development than subsequently it turns out. I also chose the audio format again, which I knew would be brilliantly narrated by British actor Robert Glenister. There’s a cast of thousands (I exaggerate, but it seems that way), subplots and backstories galore, and a host of interviews as the detective duo pursue their task of rescuing a wealthy client’s son from the clutches of a sinister religious sect. This rhetoric takes many forms, with claims that lesbians are being “coerced” into having sex with trans women and that young queer people are “pressured” into transitioning. The mystery of the drowned girl and the goings on of the church, and its activities gave me the creeps and the characters especially Mazu with her tarantula vibes was just evil. Her headmaster at St Michael's, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Private Detective Cormoran Strike is visiting his family in Cornwall when he is approached by a woman asking for help finding her mother, Margot Bamborough - who went missing in mysterious circumstances in 1974.
