About this deal

I appreciated the way Evanson at least went to the trouble to play up the mysterious nature of the Marker and how it plays into, and perhaps shapes, the strengths and weaknesses of the organisms around it. His girlfriend, Ada, is even shallower, thrown in as a token female character that does nothing but worry, give Altman someone to worry about, and conveniently tie one plot thread to another at a critical moment for no other reason than to serve the story. Altman's fellow scientists examine the pink matter he recovered and Altman privately examines the piece of the Marker, unable to identify the rock or understand what kind of technology could manipulate this sort of matter in this way.

He just gives it to you straight-forward, to the point of using the same exact words in adjacent sentences, and sometimes in the same sentence, which is lazy and a huge literary no-no. One such corporation, known as "DredgerCorp", actually a front for the military, is camped out in the Yucatan Peninsula on the edge of the massive underwater crater known as Chicxulub. Altman is forced to help in the recovery of the bathyscaphe after one of the original pilots dies in mysterious circumstances.Altman meets with Charles Hammond, a freelance worker hired by resource corporation DredgerCorp to investigate the signal in secret. Upon my manly crying, and sobbing, it suddenly came to me that this monstah also similar to a certain horror fps game monsters, which I don’t quite remember. It turns out that Altman knows a little too much for their liking, but they (narrowly) decide he will do as a member of their team.

Also, possibly could be more interesting for those who didn't play the games as they don't know what's all about therefore reading experience could be much more intense. And with all of this mixing with the often graphic and slightly freaky events that unfold as the story develops, it’s not a book best read in bed.The storyline focuses on the birth of Unitology, a religious movement that worships the Marker, and the origins of the derivative Red Markers. There are typos here and there, including a few lines that simply don't make any sense - the villain at one point points out to a man he's about to have killed "I warned you, you aren't expendable. One of the first sequences in the book involves a child finding a not-quite-dead creature washed up on the shore of the ocean. When geophysicist Michael Altman hears of the mysterious signal emitted from deep within the Chicxulub crater, he joins a team excavating the underwater crater. Underwhelming, poorly written, macabre filler that sullies the Dead Space lore with unnecessary and contradictory exposition.

Altman manages to recover the sunken sub with the decomposing and broken bodies of Hennessy and Dantec within, back to the surface, but several even more interesting things happen. It's interesting to read the first encounters with the Marker, the hallucinations and the disturbing mental frailty that comes with close contact. I did wonder if the Marker was meant to be influencing their personalities, as it does drive many to madness, suicide, or murder, but even before interacting with it Markoff is hardly an angel.
