About this deal

Her husband doesn’t know and she’s pretty good at hiding the truth from her, but you can bet she won’t be able to keep her secret under wraps for the entirety of the novel. They are not a happy family inside the house, but Mariam makes it sound perfect on the outside – they have the perfect social media photos, and they go to the most expensive places on a holiday, what could be so bad? I kept reading this relatively short novel wondering where it was going - and the answer was nowhere!

What if it was reasonable rather than self-destructive or self-pitying for a woman to feel constricted by family life and ask for more? Bertei depicts her relationship with her brilliant mother, who was schizophrenic, with uncommon empathy and grace. However, I think this speaks to Àdele’s perception of others, that they can be so satisfied with the mundanity that she despises means they can not possibly be fully human. While I've heard this book described as "subversive", I'm inclined to say this is the opposite of subversive writing. I had to fend off my family while I was in the company of this book, I couldn’t think of anything else! She comes up with a nice hook, adds a dash of humor to distract any readers who were expecting the article to provide some information. A journalist in Paris, married to a surgeon, Adèle is mother to an angelic 3-year-old boy and lives in a beautiful apartment.

Regardless of the artist, I'm inclined to steer clear of having song lyrics integrated into a novel. One final, luxurious week and she can leave the dangerous, difficult escort world, because Dora has fallen in love and is ready to embrace a better future. That Adèle’s husband is a doctor is suggestive of the world of Madame Bovary, with which the novel appears to be in dialogue. In stark contrast, Nadia emerges as a beacon of unwavering determination, striving for independence in a male-dominated environment. Her life is deeply unfulfilling; her husband, who seems to love her, is a stultifying presence, parenthood is a weight around her neck, and her own mother has clearly been a lifelong source of vicious emotional blackmail.

The domestic noir genre is very lucky to have Adele Parks, she is a magnificent author, which is down to books such as One Last Secret. Among other things, they hate marmite and opera, they love smelly cheese and the missionary position and they both absolutely do not want children.Adèle is rarely likable, but the narrative is on her side, breathless in its fears that sex won’t be available (“She hates the idea that her beauty will be wasted, that her good mood will be for nothing”) or that exposure will follow. By way of complicating the scenario, Slimani sketches a variety of possibilities as to the cause of her behaviour: a childhood trip to Paris with her mother, who abandoned her in a hotel room while meeting a man who wasn’t her husband; the uncaring teenage boyfriend with whom she lost her virginity in a damp garage, after which she felt “simultaneously dirty and proud, humiliated and victorious”; the fug and claustrophobia of the provincial family flat in which she grew up. Il y a bien sûr cette part d'horreur et de transgression qui plait dans les fictions, comme Aristote l'avait montré dans sa Poétique. The books are so similar in tone that I'd have no trouble believing they were written by the same person).
