What if it was reasonable rather than self-destructive or self-pitying for a woman to feel constricted by family life and ask for more? Bertei depicts her relationship with her brilliant mother, who was schizophrenic, with uncommon empathy and grace. However, I think this speaks to Àdele’s perception of others, that they can be so satisfied with the mundanity that she despises means they can not possibly be fully human. I had to fend off my family while I was in the company of this book, I couldn’t think of anything else! She comes up with a nice hook, adds a dash of humor to distract any readers who were expecting the article to provide some information. Her life is deeply unfulfilling; her husband, who seems to love her, is a stultifying presence, parenthood is a weight around her neck, and her own mother has clearly been a lifelong source of vicious emotional blackmail.

The domestic noir genre is very lucky to have Adele Parks, she is a magnificent author, which is down to books such as One Last Secret. Among other things, they hate marmite and opera, they love smelly cheese and the missionary position and they both absolutely do not want children.Adèle is rarely likable, but the narrative is on her side, breathless in its fears that sex won’t be available (“She hates the idea that her beauty will be wasted, that her good mood will be for nothing”) or that exposure will follow. By way of complicating the scenario, Slimani sketches a variety of possibilities as to the cause of her behaviour: a childhood trip to Paris with her mother, who abandoned her in a hotel room while meeting a man who wasn’t her husband; the uncaring teenage boyfriend with whom she lost her virginity in a damp garage, after which she felt “simultaneously dirty and proud, humiliated and victorious”; the fug and claustrophobia of the provincial family flat in which she grew up.
