About this deal

There is one thing I really don't get: The newly introduced part 70681 is used in black here, which doesnt't seem really necessary. The original model was beautiful but it was unrealistic to believe that lego would release it as-is. Part of the reason the actual Castle theme hasn't really drawn me in is that ever since my childhood, I've been unimpressed with how much more emphasis they have on siege warfare and military conflicts than on the everyday lifestyles of medieval people. In terms of build time, I assembled Medieval Blacksmith in seven hours and 33 minutes (453 minutes total).

Contrary to many claims that the set has been "simplified", I feel that many of its clever and conscientious details actually ADD to the complexity and level of detail. My first issue is that it’s easy to make mistakes while building the roof, because it uses four colors, two of which are difficult to distinguish in the building instructions: 140 Earth Blue Dark Blue and 26 Black. The tree also sneaks in a little target on the rear side for our Blacksmith’s wife to lob shots at all day. Yes, this is different from Clemens Fielder’s submission, but if you look past the differences and can notice the obvious similarities, I think you will appreciate the love that has been put into this new set. I know they don't really make themes out of ideas sets, but people have been crying out for a medieval theme for forever. I do look forward to seeing someone mod it to include red terracotta tiles though, as that could look fantastic.

I like how LEGO has gotten away from just using a base plate and had switched to using plates of different shapes and sizes to achieve the desired design. As much as I loved Pirates of Barracuda Bay, this one has got it and every other recent set beat, to me at least. The architectural details of a 3-level building from the Middle Ages are lovingly recreated in LEGO style. In medieval times, a blacksmith was a vital part of any village or town’s existence (as my kids and I discovered in our home learning while stuck in Lockdown 3). If you look at the top of the well from one side, it looks great with black and dark blue tiling, but from the other side, it doesn’t have any form of detailing at all.

I was pleased to see that the model uses a common AFOL technique to achieve rusticated corners which exploits the fact that a 1×2 tile doesn’t have any notches on the back so it can be positioned as needed. You’ll begin by building out the ground floor, before moving on to each fully-enclosed – but removable and totally accessible – upper level. In that case the "husky" could be a fairly accurate rendition of one of several all-purpose breeds from Iceland, Sweden, or Norway.
