About this deal

However, they are definitely not perfect, and–I think more importantly for the HD 660S–there is the question of value; which I will discuss towards the conclusion of this review. AFAIK, other than Sony, LG V series (have a V20 sitting in a drawer somewhere, and V60 as a daily driver) had the best headphone output. Regarding phones, I used to have the LG V20 that had a built in Quad DAC, now I have a cheap Redmi phone, but thinking to get the Sony Xperia Pro that “supports Hi Res music” or the Samsung Galaxy S23 ultra that explicitly supports 32 bit / 768 KHz music. There’s enough clarity to separate the rolling waves of guitar distortion and clattering drums, and even the brash, overdriven drum and bass of Current Value’s Bigger Picture manages to bounce along excitedly without ever veering too far into harshness.

I tried the the three headphones with my HeadRoom Max, Bottlehead Crack, and Simaudio 430HA amplifiers. All the noise of public transit will seep into your audio and people surrounding you will be able to hear what you’re listening to. Aside from somewhat boosted low mids, the S2 shares the S1’s flat center mids and high mid to mid treble ramp.

The result is not as mid-focused or overall neutral-warm like the 6XX is, it’s a bit closer to a more mainstream tuning, but not nearly as extreme.

The HD 660 S adds meat to the midrange and low frequencies while attempting to retain the beautifully detailed, natural-sounding balance of its predecessors. The newfound emphasis in the lows and highs alike offers the impactful satisfaction of V-shaped tunings without sacrificing its natural mid range amplitude and clarity. The HD600 was 300 ohm impedance and had 97dB sensitivity, but the HD660S is 150 ohm impedance (for impedance a lower number means easier to drive) and 104dB sensitivity (for sensitivity a higher number means easier to drive). When running them on devices without a discrete amplifier I thought that they sounded a little more compressed, so I will list an amplifier as recommended for these.

For music I think they perform alright, but for other applications like watching movies or gaming, there are definitely more immersive stages on other headphones. The Sennheiser HD 660s seem like a pretty good option for consuming the more spacious sound that these are well known for. He's fairly privy to inside information, and a good hard look at the two make it fairly obvious they're related. To acclimate, I used the Chord Hugo 2 DAC/amp (as DAC only) and the Cayin HA-1AMK2 tube amp on its lowest output impedance setting. The HD 650 is a bit too warm sounding for me (just a bit), and the HD 600 is my favorite of the two. Though I heard most of the differences between the S and S2 in their balances, there are some subtle improvements that I heard in the 660S2’s staging.I had the good fortune once of sitting right in the circle with the Muir String Quartet and I was simply breathless with the absolutely smooth nature of the sound. To put it simply, it possesses an aggressive smack unlike the more forgiving, carefully carved treble we heard on the HD 660S. The underemphasized treble of the HD 660 S may be preferable if you find sounds in the higher frequencies particularly piercing or painful, but, for most people, the HD 600 sound better-balanced overall.

Official replacement capsule (drive unit + surrounding fittings) for Sennheiser HD660S Over-Ear Headphones. Although I have yet to try a pair of open-back Sennheiser ‘phones I’ve heard nothing but good things about them.Low-bass, responsible for the thump and rumble common to bass-heavy genres, is lacking by more than 4dB. Sennheiser has been around since like forever and they’re one of the most respected companies in audio. It is a high-end aesthetic that embraces both timeless elegance and contemporary style – uncompromising in its craftsmanship, like everything about the HD 660S.
