About this deal

Everyone today knows Amelia Earhart as a famous flier from the days when aviators were constantly fascinating the public with their, often deadly, exploits. In a pickle where she had to choose between one or the other I am certain she would prioritize flying. For example, not many people in the world today, realize that she was a social worker before she became a well-known aviator, or that social work was once a highly esteemed profession in the early part of the 20th Century. Most of the world knows AE as a master aviator and an enigmatic legend that disappeared during an attempted round-the-world flight in 1937.

All of them went on to achieve incredible things, yet all of them began life as a little child with a dream. Though "tousle-haired" and rather thin, she photographed well and modeled her own designs for promotional spreads. What I am saying is that Susan Butler, the author of this book, has the knack of knowing what to put in a book to make a person's "story" sparkle. The dramatic 1928 flight brought her international attention and the opportunity to earn a living in aviation. This empowering series of books offers inspiring messages to children of all ages, in a range of formats. The Sound of Wings vividly captures the drama and mystery behind the most influential woman in "The Golden Age of Flight"—from her tomboy days at the turn of the century and her early childhood.

When Amelia Earhart mysteriously disappeared in 1937 during her attempted flight around the world, she was already known as America's most famous female aviator. Amelia Earhart did so much more than just fly planes although she was very impressive in doing that. Lots of unnecessary detail, and a long list of characters detracted from the main objective of setting the context of Amelia's family and upbringing. Meet three inspirational women from the world of science: Ada Lovelace, Amelia Earhart, and Marie Curie!

They then departed Lae on July 2 for the 4,113-kilometer (2,556-mile) flight to their next refueling stop, Howland Island, a three-kilometer (two-mile) long and less-than-a-mile wide dot in the Pacific Ocean.

I adored the audiobook narration by Anna Fields/Kate Fleming, even if I at times had to rewind to jot down facts. ETA: The only thing that prevents me from giving this book five stars was that I wanted to hear the voices of Chapman and George Putnam. With rewritten text for older children, the treasuries each bring together a multitude of dreamers in a single volume.Amy Guest, a rich woman, would have loved to find a way to be the first woman to fly across the ocean, but she wasn't about to make the rash decision to risk her neck in the pursuit of this highly dangerous undertaking. I could only hope one more passage across that part of the Pacific would mark a little more clearly the pathway over which an air service of the future will inevitably fly. The 1930's were a time of increased activities which only served to strengthen Amelia's flying skills while adding to her fame. S. Coast Guard cutter Itasca, anchored off shore of Howland, could not complete any direct two-way radio communication and neither Earhart nor Noonan were competent at Morse Code. Did you know that her first transatlantic flight in 1928, the first time a woman flew across the Atlantic, she was merely a passenger?
