About this deal

I don’t have the words to explain how helpful it is to know that you’re not alone, that you’re not the only one to have a broken brain if i can say it like that. Joe's likability and humour that you can see on TV come across in the book, and I enjoyed the autobiographical element of hearing about Joe's life.

I must have been on Mars when it first came out because I mop up books on BPD (being in the healing process myself, a long and arduous journey but well worth the ride,) but I'd never heard of this until it was mentioned on the BPD Bunch podcast.

Having somebody put their arm around you and proselytize is something you find all too much in books, but having someone pat your arm and say 'yeah, I get that' with real empathy in their voice is very rare, and this felt like walking in the park with somebody who wasn't judging me. Part of my job is working with children who have suicidal ideation, self harm which affects their mental health. I feel like he partly wrote this book to give others dealing with mental illness some hope that it can get better. He tries to explain what your life is like when you essentially have a brain that's trying to kill you every day.

c!dal thoughts on a daily basis as opposed to the less nuanced, more reactionary portrayal and understanding of su!

Heartbreaking and very honest, this ‘ not a self help book ‘ details Joe’s descent into and emergence from addiction while battling with his mental health and suicidal state.

His message is that we don’t want yet another book which says: "my life used to be shit but now it’s great and you can do it too!No discussion of depression, suicide, or BPD would be uncomfortable for me because that’s my reality, much like the author’s. This book narrates little if any victory or miracles of insight or overcoming - which is, of course, the central challenge of life with BPD. But if there is even the smallest chance that me telling you how I live with me helps you live with you; if it opens up a space for someone, somewhere to be more honest about their mental illness, it will have been worth it. It's a collection of the funny, sad, shocking and weird stuff that has happened to me along the way. For those that do not suffer from a mental illness, can you imagine that scenario playing out hundreds to thousands of times a day with each task, interaction, or memory?

I saw his 48 second gymnastics commentary on Twitter and immediately started following him, not knowing anything more about him. He's been acting like an idiot and talking about his broken brain on Twitter for a while now, and since March 2020 when there were suddenly a lot more people with a lot less on, his videos have been viewed over 90 million times. Joe Tracini travels to the horrible heart of his abominable illness and unflinchingly examines the misery it has heaped upon him and everyone around him. When people with BPD get a diagnosis, or don’t get a diagnosis, and read a book like this, it’s like going through a check list of everything about you no-one could ever see or imagine. So I used to chat with Joe on social media long before the world knew his name and his love of leotards. Most people with BPD are undiagnosed as it takes a pretty serious crash to sit up and think: hey, something’s not quite right here. I absolutely loved listening to Joe Tracini narrate the audio book, and it just brought everything to life so much more than just reading the hardback. It's so common for people with BPD to take their own lives that it's one of the only mental illnesses that lists suicide as a symptom.
