About this deal

Miyagikyo distillery was built in foothills of the Miyagi region within a wide forest valley at the junction of two rivers - the area is renowned for pure air and clean, fresh water. My rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also the drinking of alcohol before, after and if need be during all meals and in the intervals between them. Located in the valley of Miyagi, a region in the north of Japan's Honshu island known for its pure air and the quality of its natural springs, the Miyagikyo distillery produces a refined malt whisky with a signature fruity and floral freshness. Masataka Taketsuru, founder of Nikka and founding father of Japanese whisky learned his trade at Hazelburn Distillery in Campbelltown.

On the palate, lemon and vanilla flavours come to the fore, followed by notes of fudge and marzipan. Asahi Breweries acquired Nikka in 2001 since when Japanese whiskies, as a whole, have seen a huge rise in popularity across the world and has led to significant further expansion of the their production facilties to cope with demand. Commencing operations in 1969, Taketsuru intentionally crafted a distinct dichotomy between his two creations: Miyagikyo and Yoichi.

The single malt Miyagikyo bottling represents the perfect expression of the distillery's delicate character, with an emphasis on ex-sherry casks for maturation to bring added depth to this whisky's natural charm. In Yoichi, Masataka Taketsuru saw numerous reminders of Scotland, and this convinced him that this should be the home of Japanese Whisky. Miyagikyo single malts have an elegance and fruity nature, using malted barley that is both lightly peated and non-peated. There’s some darker, more complex notes too, in the form of chocolate, along with candied fruit and some honey. This is Nikka`s approachable, entry-level single malt from Miyagikyo distillery, which is light in body, yet full of flavour.

The nose is some fresh fruit, banana, apricot and oaky, and it could be a little intensive only if you take a deep breath from it. Plenty of Malted Barley notes at the forefront which are followed by Herbaceous undertones with hints of Liquorice and Chocolate all finished off with hints of Ginger and Citrus notes. This flagship expression is the best selling Japanese whisky in Europe and is a blend of Coffey Grain , and spirits from Yoichi and Miyagikyo. Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt is a complex, fruity and soft Japanese single malt made at the Miyagikyo distillery near Sendai in northern Japan.
