About this deal

Barney and his mum are taking the train to Cornwall via London, having lost all their possessions in the Coventry bombings.

In the darkness, sheltering in a railway tunnel, the stranger in the carriage with Barney and his mother tells them a story to pass the time. Copy and paste it, adding a note of your own, into your blog, a Web page, forums, a blog comment, your Facebook account, or anywhere that someone would find this page valuable. l’origine de son récit, l’histoire de Henry Tandey, qui a laissé le souvenir d’avoir été un soldat exceptionnel de la Première Guerre mondiale mais dont l’héroïsme a été enjolivé par un épisode qui, s’il est vrai, est l’un des plus grands événements hypothétiques de l’Histoire : de ceux dont on se demande « et qu’est-ce qui se serait passé si… ?

As it his, two of his successors - Constantius between 408 and 421 and Aetius between 433 and 453 - would manage to hold their own, for a while. HE also manages to pull of most of the tricks and strategems in the book, trying to make the Germans believe that his forces are much larger than in reality. I have now bought a hardback copy for myself to replace my dogeared paperback and have bought copies for friends and relatives. In the year AD 406 Rome was on the defensive everywhere, and a single Roman legion stood desperate guard on the Empire’s Rhine frontier. După război, poți să discuți ce e bine și ce e rău, dar în miezul luptei, soldații nu-și pun asemenea întrebări.

The story-within-a-story format added to the engagement, and I was fascinated with the events, as they are based on a true story or at least a legend believed to be true enough by many. I have read several books now from this author and feel the subject matter would be very complex for young readers.A fascinating read for young readers and adults to think about how history might have been changed if Henry Tandey had made a different choice. For younger readers, or for those that enjoy having “breaks’ in their reading, the book was split into multiple parts and multiple chapters within those parts, so it won’t be hard to progress in the story even if you only have a few minutes to spare. The life of Henry Tandey (famously known as “The Soldier Who Didn’t Shoot Adolf Hilter”) was inspiration for Billy Byron’s story, as described in the forward and in the back of the book.

I'd caught part of a piece on TV (the One Show) with Michael Morpurgo who was talking about his inspiration for writing this book and I was intrigued; I thought to myself "I'll have to get that book". I’m obviously very aware of War Horse, and knew that there were several books he wrote set during the war, but beyond that I knew little more. The powerful new novel from the master storyteller - inspired by the true story of one man who might have stopped World War II. The powerful new novel from the master storyteller – inspired by the true story of one man who might have stopped World War II. This is one of those books that can be read on so many levels that any reader (whether middle school child, teen or adult) would get something from reading it.

This book is historical fiction, but there is information at the end of the book about the real people in the story and who the story was loosely based on.

This, the man said, was the reason why Billy volunteered for the most dangerous jobs, took incredible risks, and fought as hard as he could to destroy the enemy; he wasn’t interested in the rights or wrongs of war, or in being brave, he just wanted it to be over.

Well Barney, the main character, has had the same thing happen to him when a German fighter plane bombed his house. If you’ve got any suggestions for books that should be on my list though please do leave me a comment below.
