Elian finds that solace in being with his crew, the family he chose who are the people he can truly be himself with. So many elements and breadcrumbs mentioned in the novel up to this point all lock in to place and have a part to play (including an especially emotional and heartstrings-tugging one). This is a gorgeous story about how life doesn’t always work out the way we want it to, but if we’re willing, we can still make it a great life. I’d also like to add as a side-note that Elian was everything I always imagined Prince Eric, my favorite prince of all time, to be outside of Disney’s shallow characterization of him. As narrators, Lira and Elian have distinct voices, but for all their swagger, both characters are struggling under the expectations of their parents and in their role in war that started long before they were even born.
It was mostly banter that was just uniquely terrible, really just a whole new level of unfunny and bad but with characters being like “Wow. During the first half of the book, I couldn't shake the notion that it's not a typical story about the prince saving the princess, or vice-versa. This novel takes the story we all know and love and injects quite a bit of darkness and reality into it. The “To Kill a Kingdom” is an emotional roller coaster of a story, which unfolds in a non- linear manner. It's very different, and this "mermaid" definitely doesn't want to be human and bag a prince - unless by that you mean killing him. They are both rough around the edges, both willing to do whatever they deem necessary, and both unafraid to get their hands a little bloody. She purposefully angers the Sea Queen so that she can get Elian to bring the Crystal out of the palace, but the Sea Queen uses her magic to summon a horde of sirens to the lake around the ice palace.
He decides that his crew needs to get the Crystal to defeat the Sea Queen, but first he goes to find information about the Crystal in the royal library.
