About this deal

Set during the summer of 1983, THIS IS ENGLAND is the story of Shaun (Thomas Turgoose); a precocious twelve-year-oldcoming to terms with the death of his father. This resulted in the 2007 documentary The Living Room, and for years after, Clark managed to forge a music career – although he will most likely be remembered for his contribution of The Smiths cover to the This Is England soundtrack.

Cohen's photography really manages to encapsulate the bleak feeling that was evident of the time, and is both gritty and dour. Why should anyone believe Johnson put his country before himself or believe his anti-Russian rhetoric?

An enraged Combo enters a frenzied state and brutally beats Milky unconscious, while Banjo holds down Shaun, and Meggy watches on in horror. I was lucky enough to attend the first UK screening of Shane Meadows' latest offering, THIS IS ENGLAND, last Tuesday at the London Film Festival. Shaun also develops a romantic relationship with Michelle, also known as Smell, an older girl who dresses in a new wave, new romantic style.

Like ROMEO BRASS, THIS IS ENGLAND manages to balance the light-hearted and often hilarious, with menace and tension that's excruciating to endure. He introduces Shaun to Milky, the only black skinhead of the gang; Pukey; Kes; and the overweight, dim-witted Gadget. Combo viciously threatens Sandhu with a machete and the gang steal goods for a birthday party under Combo's instructions. Their first collaborative venture was Small Time in 1996, a project which introduced Clark to film producer and drummer Dominic Dillon. THIS IS ENGLAND is a film without polished aesthetics and one that has the raw visual style that's not be seen since the films of Alan Clarke (SCUM, MADE IN Britain, THE FIRM).

Shaun bonds closely with Richard "Woody" Woodford, viewing him a big brother figure, and his girlfriend Lorraine "Lol" Jenkins, who takes a motherly role towards him.Combo soon causes a rift within the group and becomes the catalyst for them becoming a militant, racist force. Many British films that attempt dramedy falter because one or the other/both is unconvincing, but Meadows manages to combine comedy and drama seamlessly; the laughs come thick and fact but the jolts come harder than a kick to the head. The soundtrack is now available to stream/download here, where you can also check out audio samples. Shaun is then shown walking near the beach and throwing his St George's Flag, a gift from Combo, into the sea. Describing the unique allure of Clark’s music, Meadows observed: “Gavin’s stuff was right up there with people like Nick Drake, Tim Rose.
