About this deal

Lomax's story was made into the BBC television drama Prisoners in Time in 1995, starring John Hurt as Lomax, Randall Duk Kim as Nagase, and Rowena Cooper as Patti. The book is heart-wrenching and provide a horrific account of Eric Lomax as a Japanese prisoner-of-war and the torture he undergoes. His best friend and fellow ex-POW Finlay brings him evidence that one of their captors, an interpreter for the Japanese secret police Takashi Nagase, is now working as a tourist guide in the very camp where he interpreted for the Kempetai as they tortured British POWs. Lomax finally took an unprecedented move in the 1990s to seek out some of those people who were responsible for his torture (he initially planned revenge for them). Even though much of the content is horrifying, this is an absolutely riveting and memorable book, and I highly recommend it.

The Japanese treatment of their Prisoners Of War during World War Two is about as monstrous as it's possible to imagine. Nagase also became a devout Buddhist and as part of his atonement financed a Buddhist peace temple near the bridge on the River Kwai. He trained somewhat in Scotland and England – and then was shipped to India and finally Singapore in November of 1941. In particolare, si fa riferimento alla costruzione della cosiddetta “ferrovia della morte”, che doveva collegare Bangkok a Rangoon.During the war, Lomax serves as a signals officer and is captured when the Japanese conquer Singapore. After the war, they were together for 37 years and shared three children: Linda May Lomax (born December 14, 1946, died December 13, 1993), Eric Lomax Jr. One day, he chances upon an article describing one of his tormentors as a reformed man doing social work in Thailand. Eric Lomax's second wife Patricia "Patti" Wallace, portrayed by Nicole Kidman in the film, encouraged him to seek help for his nightmares, rages and feelings of isolation ( The Railway Man book).

The man is remarkable when you consider the huge suffering that being a prisoner of war would impose on anyone. Eric Lomax and his former torturer, Takashi Nagase, pose on the bridge with Eric's book in the 1990s (bottom).Lomax and six others were found to be guilty of having constructed radios and listened to broadcasts from the Allied forces and potentially communicated with subversive forces in Malaya. Also, shortly after Lomax's book was published in 1995, the Everyman TV series featured an episode starring John Hurt, titled "Prisoners in Time," in which Hurt portrays Eric Lomax, an ex-prisoner of war who comes face to face with his former Japanese torturer. Just as Colin Firth finished travelling around the world, to the huge film sets constructed to tell the humble but never-to-be-forgotten story of the life of Eric Lomax, his subject’s health finally deteriorated, and he died at home in Berwick-upon-Tweed at the age of 93. Our resources are crucial for knowledge lovers everywhere—so if you find all these bits and bytes useful, please pitch in. Liam Lacey of The Globe and Mail stated, "Firth gives the performance his all as a man trapped in a vortex of grief, shame and hate, but as in Scott Hicks's Shine, which the film occasionally resembles, there's an overtidy relationship between trauma and catharsis".

He married his first wife Agnes ("Nan") on 20 November 1945, just three weeks after being liberated. The book starts with Lomax's early years in Edinburgh, working for the post office, his jaunts out to disused railway tracks and his job working as a signal man in Edinburgh Castle. Colin Firth is a lover of literature and for the most part has chosen wisely in terms of film adaptations e. Eric reconnected with Bradley in 1989, and it was Jim Bradley's wife Lindy who gave Eric the photocopy of the article from the August 15, 1989 edition of the Japan Times, which contained a picture of Takashi Nagase, Eric's former tormentor. Nice and clean pages as new with a couple of small creases on the edges of the pages, light shelf wear on the Dj cover.

In all, of the more than 60,000 Allied troops captured by the Japanese, approximately 12,399 prisoners died ( VancouverSun. On Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, the film has a 67% approval rating based on 128 reviews, with an average rating of 6. In his captivity, along with his fellowmen, they design and assemble radios to get first hand new on the progress of war. Then comes the surrender of Singapore and imprisonment by the Japanese, an event that the reader feels approaching with a sense of dread and which, when it happens, feels like tumbling into the abyss. It packed such a powerful punch and rounded off all that had gone before with such aplomb and grace and wisdom that it made me cry.

The irony of so many lives wasted over a futile attempt to build a railway in the worst possible place in the world is not lost on him either. In his book, Eric states that Patti, portrayed by Nicole Kidman in the movie, had been in a marriage that was as reduced as his own. After seeing the movie and being quite affected by it ( interesting audience in cinema, nobody left in hurry afterwards and some were crying ) I was eager to read the book.In addition to providing the telecommunications infrastructure in the field, the Corps of Signals also engage in electronic warfare, scrambling enemy communications, radar, etc. I will not reveal the conclusion of the book except to say that seldom have I read of such an emotional upheaval with beautiful passages of forgiveness and reconciliation.
