We fired up the Tower T17076 Xpress Pro Combo and tried the usual selection of options, starting with a tray of frozen french fries. The exterior casing can be swiftly wiped over too, emulating the ease and convenience of owning a regular air fryer. Potentially no, but using miles less oil and having a pile of fries in record time, it isn’t to be sniffed at. Using less oil, you lose the fat, not the flavour, as food retains it’s rich fried taste with up to 99% less fat.

I’m slightly less convinced about the Tower’s ability to air fry chips – it does the job brilliantly, with ready-to-serve fries emerging in around 20 minutes depending on how you like ‘em. Controls are located along the top of the unit, which offer precision tweaking of temperature using up and down arrows along with a host of other options. In addition to air-frying, the Tower T17076 10-in-1 Digital Air Fryer can be used as a rotisserie oven as well as for grilling, roasting, baking and dehydrating various foods. We found the initial smell of strong plastic quite off putting but after following the instructions to wash each of the removable parts and to wipe the interiors, this dissipated slightly.

The oil-drip tray is useful for gathering any excess oils through the cooking process, and was very easy to clean.

I started by cooking 800g of homemade chips, having parboiled them for 7 minutes for a fluffier texture. On the whole, the resulting chips came were nicely browned and crispy on the outside, with a few pale bits, and fluffy on the inside. I got a similarly enthusiastic reaction to my homemade lamb kebabs, which are often swimming in oil, but much of it dripped off thanks to the way the food is suspended in the unit.Again, the heat circulating right the way around the bird works a treat, allowing thorough penetration into the meat, while browning the outside to great effect.
