SNOW GOOSE - ArvindGuptaToys THE SNOW GOOSE - ArvindGuptaToys

Part travel book and part natural history, Fiennes follows the route that the geese take by coach, meeting a series of characters along the way.He has lived all over the place, including England, Mexico, Lichtenstein and Monaco, and he lived in Antibes for the last years of his life. When 'Open Book' asked various authors to champion a favourite negelected classic on the programme, Michael Morpurgo chose 'The Snow Goose'; perhaps no surprise, with his own story 'War Horse' depicting a friendship between a boy and his horse which takes them both into the horror of World War 1. It starred Richard Harris and Jenny Agutter as Rhayader and Frith, and went out just after Wheelbase, in which presenter Barrie Gill looked at the potential cost of motoring holidays in 1972. The Snow Goose is a simple, short written parable on the regenerative power of friendship and love, set against a backdrop of the horror of war. At first Fritha is scared of Rhayader, with his sinister hump and crooked hand, but he is gentle and kind and Fritha begins to visit regularly.

Philip Rhayader is a disabled young artist leading a solitary existence in a disused lighthouse on the Essex marshlands. The author feels lonely and homesick from the start, compares his longing for home to the geese migration to their birth land, overlooking the fact that the geese might enjoy the sun, the wind, the changing lights along their journey. If you’ve already agreed to receive these from Vintage Inns, don’t worry, you don’t need to do anything as your preferences will remain the same. One day, a young girl, Frith, brings him an injured snow goose, that has lost its way in storms, and has been shot by hunters. The black tips to the wings weren’t decorative: the concentration of melanin pigments – the pigments responsible for dark colouring – strengthens the primary flight feathers, making them more resilient, an adaptation often seen in birds that undertake long migrations. I suppose kids might enjoy the book – it’s not a challenging read, though I’m not sure what a kid is going to get out of it.
