About this deal

It makes for a much cleaner, albeit stickier, process overall, and its effectiveness impressed us on nearly every test stain. As with all of our tests, our criteria for judging stain removers includes some specs, objective criteria, subjective criteria and any “wow” factors we encountered. We could’ve spent months and months staining different types of fabrics with different substances, leaving them for different amounts of time and tallying up extremely granular, in-depth results for every possible stain scenario. They often dry up before we can ever use them and seem to smear the stain more than actually remove it.

But when I opened the machine door, the powder had turned a huge patch from tan to pink, making the shirt completely discolored. It was one of the most effective stain removers for getting out stubborn pen marks and foundation, though the coffee stain seemed to spread just as well as it lifted. As a pre-treating solution, our tester was shocked to see that it outperformed Oxi-Clean in removing foundation stains (!I couldn’t help thinking that the travel disaster was preventable, had I simply brought along on-the-go stain removers. It's also unscented, which our tester appreciated, though she mentioned that after taking the shirt out of the dryer, it smelled faintly of paint, but that seemed to clear up quickly. That traction helped with the salsa and soy sauce, and it didn’t create that problematic halo effect as some of the other similar ones. It’s always wise to first check for colorfastness by soaking a hidden corner of a garment in warm water and detergent for few minutes and see if the color runs on a white paper towel.

She is a passionate cleaner and laundry-doer in her household, and after reviewing hundreds of products for SPY has nearly perfected her product testing process. We ultimately compared them against each other for our final verdict, but took their distinct designs into account when closing ranks. Unlike portable sprays or pens, the wipes allow you to moderate how much stain removal liquid you use and there’s much less bleeding and mess during the application process. We’re a bit surprised to rank this popular stain stick so low, but we were unimpressed by Tide’s results as a whole. That said, I also tried a few squirts of the stain remover on a months-old white stain on my black Zara leggings that I had been dousing with regular Shout every time I put it in the wash.

We took a pack of white cotton t-shirts, a neutral fabric that would obviously show stains, and created a grid on each of them for each stain remover we were testing and painted on each stain to create a splotch. It didn’t remove mustard or ink nearly as well as some other samples and despite removing coffee and ketchup quite well, it doesn’t have any unique or notable features we picked up on during testing. If it was a pre-treat solution or detergent, we let the stain dry for over an hour before applying the stain remover, following each package’s instructions for care.

Not so with Tide To Go Wipes, which proved gentle on our white tee but tough on stains—in fact, out of everything we tried, it was the most effective at removing coffee stains (making it a must-have in this cold-brew-obsessed editor’s purse). We tried a few ultra-portable stain remover stick and wipe options and this one from OxiClean was the most impressive. But the actual step-by-step instructions say to let it sit for five to 10 minutes and then to wash by hand or in the machine, and then rinse thoroughly to get rid of stains.

Taking an old stick of Dove deodorant, I obnoxiously rubbed in every which way on the inside of a dark blue shirt, caking it with a full-on layer of white. Shout’s Stain Remover Spray worked perfectly well during testing, but not better than Resolve’s Spray n’ Wash, Zout or other options previously mentioned. Over the holidays, I took an old T-shirt—one that was 100 percent cotton, as my mom felt the fabric was one of the tougher ones to get stains out of—and caked it with substances travelers might come upon when looking sharp matters (think business trips, destination weddings, or a celebratory getaway).

the Emergency Stain Rescue—full name: A Little Red Wipe of Emergency Stain Rescue—comes in glossier and seemingly stronger packaging.None of them damaged our clothing or were particularly difficult to use, they just didn’t “wow” our editors either. After rubbing it out a bit, there was a pink halo around the original stain—and it only set in more as it dried out. We’ve all been there: you’re out and about enjoying a nice burger, salad, and glass of red wine when all of a sudden one, or all three, decide to spill on your favorite t-shirt and you’re suddenly in desperate need of the best stain remover. The pen bleeds quite a bit during use, making it somewhat impractical for use on-the-go while you’re wearing the stained item.
