About this deal

What bugs me though is that I think this book falls prey to wanting to tackle too many issues, and not everything working seamlessly together. But hey, with almost solid 5 star reviews I bet this book will be the winner of some kind of GR award or something.

People on Platform 5 by Clare Pooley | Goodreads The People on Platform 5 by Clare Pooley | Goodreads

In Clare Pooley's author's letter at the end of this book, she talks about how she came up with these characters - how she decided to disregard the unspoken rules of commuting to create a world in which a large cast of people who take the train together become a community. I’m fascinated by friendships that transcend age, background, and experience because I feel that they can add a whole new dimension to that relationship. The answer, of course, with the unconditional friendship of the newly connected commuter group who find in each other a chance to face up to some very real challenges, the kind that are always easier to handle when you have others standing in the corner with you.

Clare Pooley graduated from Newnham College, Cambridge and spent twenty years in the heady world of advertising.

I was bored half way through the book, I did not care about any characters nor Iona for some reason. The narrative is shared through multiple PoVs which enables us to get to know these characters, their backstories and the challenges they are facing in their present lives. Iona used to be wild and intrepid, married to the love of her life, tall, beautiful and very black Bea.Every day Iona Iverson, a larger-than-life magazine advice columnist, travels the ten stops from Hampton Court to Waterloo Station by train, accompanied by her dog, Lulu. The Authenticity Project, Clare’s first novel, was a New York Times bestseller, a BBC Radio 2 book club pick, and winner of the RNA debut novel award.

I was not expecting there to be so many POV's, but they all meshed together to create this wonderfully quirky and hodgepodge quilt of human experience. It turns out that talking to strangers can teach you about the world around you--and even more about yourself. The Authenticity Project, Clare's debut novel, was a BBC Radio 2 bookclub pick, a New York Times bestseller, the winner of the RNA debut novel award and a Babelio award. She is the author of the hugely popular blog, Mummy was a Secret Drinker, under the pseudonym Sober Mummy and her memoir, The Sober Diaries was published in 2017 to critical acclaim. It’s full of second chances, connections, friendship, forgiveness, honesty, and proof that people aren’t always just as they appear. Riding at the same time on the same trains together is, hands-down, the best thing that happens to all of them. It is an easy read feel good book with a well drawn cast of fantastic characters who become unlikely friends on their daily commute.
