For me, personally, Mr Men books hold a special place in my heart as I grew up reading them in the 1970s and Roger Hargreaves is one of my favourite authors. Exley explains that the brand hasn’t been kept alive merely through merchandising, but by stories that place old characters in new scenarios (as in Mr Impossible and the Easter Egg Hunt in 2015, and Mr Men Little Miss Happy Diwali in 2020). Still, he is able to get a cookie from his kitchen without actually leaving his bed – which is quite a feat, though I'm sure we will end up making robots to do that for us (or simply have children). Hargreaves was born in a private hospital at 201 Bath Road, Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, England, to Alfred Reginald and Ethel Mary Hargreaves, and grew up in High Lees, 703 Halifax Road, also in Cleckheaton, outside of which there now is a commemorative plaque.

Hargreaves was inspired by the success of Snoopy in the US and began working with the licensing agency Copyright Promotions in 1974. Now it's a dual thing – me, for not wanting to take credit for the idea, and also it's part of the brand strength. Tickle goes about his day humiliating people in positions of authority, making them look stupid and disrupting the valuable work they are doing in the community and their contributions to the wider society. Father-of-four Roger had long harboured ambitions of quitting his job in London and giving up the commute.

By the early 1980s, there were an estimated 700 different Mr Men products, and in 1988, Hargreaves won a European licensing award for an “outstanding contribution to the licensing industry”.
