About this deal

Pairing a book like this with a book like Herodotus’s Histories makes for one of my favorite ways to learn about a given period and people.

I’ve always loved historical fiction as a genre and cut my teeth on Hornblower and Tai-Pan, Flashman, Sharpe and Jack Aubrey. The author portrays their characters through their words, and I hope fiction part of historical fiction is not fickle. This volume is as usual very well written and historical where possible but this period is less interested than the one preceding and subsequent, when Pericles is at the top -- which book is in process at the time of reviewing. A reviewer forPublishers Weeklyrecognized that “Iggulden has a solid grounding in Roman military history,” but found that “anachronisms in speech and attitude roll underfoot and trip up authenticity. Iggulden has clearly mastered this genre and has a fantastic nack for keeping you hooked on the story.

The second part has Pericles back in Athens and getting involved as the moneyed sponsor of the dramatist Aeschylus’ acting troupe getting ready for The Festival of Dionysus. The second part of the story is mainly about Pericles preparing for the satyr play and there's a ghastly lack of politics/warfare there. But Pericles is grown now, a warrior in his own right determined to prove his worth – to his father, his friends, but especially to himself. This great book is the 1st part of a 2-set series featuring the Greeks of Athens and their allies in the Golden Age. This swords-and-sandals epic brings the sights, sounds and smells of the ancient world to life, telling the story of the ongoing clash of empires between Greece and Persia. The Gates of Romeis an absorbing portrait of ancient Roman life and history, well written and full of suspense—even for those who know the ending.

This era is one people are most like aware of given the films such as The 300, I mention this as it is in a similar timeline to the story and his son, Pleistarchus features at the beginning of the story. He went to Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Primary in Ruislip, Middlesex, then attended St Martins School in Northwood, before moving on to Merchant Taylors' School. While most of what I’ve written was me going on a bit of a rant about how it ended, I really did enjoy reading it. Again, so much of the focus was around getting to understand Pericles, his thoughts, his ambitions, his relationships. As Caesar is exacting his revenge and becomes a legend in regions far away from home, his friend Marcus Brutus is fighting different kinds of battles. The Golden Age of Athens refers to the period of history that will start in 480 until 404 BC, where Athens and its allies will rise up and be victorious against Persia, as well as becoming once more an enemy of Sparta. Connor Igguldenwas born on 24 February 1971 to an English father (who was anRAF pilotduring theSecond World War) and an Irish mother (whose grandfather was aseanchaí).
