It’s bold and flavorful, yet mellow enough to sip neat, and italso shines in classic cocktails like Old Fashioneds or Manhattans. It doesn’t come cheap, but Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select Tennessee Whiskey is a fitting tribute to the star: bold, smooth, and excellent in its field. Palate: I’ll skip the suspense and jump right into it: Sinatra Select has a pleasant depth of flavors that I normally don’t find in regular Jack products. After all, Hoboken, New Jersey, is where Frank Sinatra was born in 1915 and spent most of his childhood.

Portland’s a great whiskey town: It fits the weather and my general mood (even improves it sometimes).

This exposes the whiskey to extra layers of oak which imparts a rich amber color, bold character and a pleasant smokiness, followed by an incredibly smooth vanilla finish. Today, due in part to the Sinatra connection, Jack Daniel’s is the best-selling American whiskey in the world. Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select is bottled at 90 proof and gains its rich character from specially crafted “Sinatra Barrels” mingled with our classic Tennessee Whiskey. On the positive side of things, I do legitimately think that Sinatra Select stands out enough from other, more standard Jack Daniel’s offerings by how it tastes. Very good, using words my friend whom bought it for says, he says Jack is his friend, this Sinatra says is dangerous, tastes too good.

It’s hard to imagine now, but when Frank Sinatra was allegedly first introduced to Jack Daniel’s by comedian Jackie Gleason at New York lounge Toots Shor’s, the company was small and relatively obscure—not quite the equivalent of today’s “craft” brands, but you get the idea.

The grooved barrels in which it’s aged put the liquid in contact with both charred and uncharred wood, giving it a richness and complexity lacking in standard Jack Daniel’s. As I would expect, a lot of the trademark Jack notes can still be detected like vanilla, caramel, honey and toasted wood. We combined our widely praised Neat Glass with one of our 3oz Flight Bottles and housed them together in a custom EVA travel case.

It even manages to hold its own when served Sinatra-style, with three ice cubes (no more, no less) and a splash of water.

Special grooved “Sinatra barrels” allow the liquid to make contact with both charred and uncharred wood for a deeper and more complex flavor. Here’s a picture of what that looks like (far right) next to a standard charred barrels (the ones on the left). The finish also has a texture that it leaves in your mouth (different from the palate) that is more velvety than usual. Does that mean that the power of a singer/crooner who died 25 years ago and whose last album came out 40 years ago really holds this much power? Whether you think it’s worth the ring-a-ding-ding depends on how big a fan you are of Frank and/or Jack.

It is different and does not rely solely on the overdone banana bread trope that so many other JD products are known for.But if you are an enthusiast who has lots of experience with various whiskies, this is one you can confidently skip. The spice on the palate was slightly too much (strange of me to say for a 90 proof whiskey) but I’m reducing its score because of that. One of the most talked about features of Sinatra Select is how the barrels have special grooves cut into the inside of the barrel. As usual, I sampled this neat in a glencairn but I don’t think Frank Sinatra would have ever drank it that way.
