As I'm not happy messing with mains voltages, I didn't try modifying the PSU to connect the DC negative side to mains earth. I know because I have a LiPo pack in my 817 and it got very hot when I ran on external power after the LiPo voltage got low. Lead acid batteries are not light by any means, so if you’re operating on foot, it’s the absolute worst way to go. I have the Turnigy charger which is similar in look to the one Andy mentioned and that works well too.

A better filter is available as a (pretty expensive) option, but you can only fit one accessory filter, which is a problem if you want a narrow filter for CW. You need about 100W of SSB to be heard as well as 5W of CW, so using the code will boost the number of contacts you can make considerably. The Elecraft K2 draws about 240mA on receive, normally configured, but this can be reduced to about 140mA for portable use by invoking various power-saving options. Although FT-817 Commander is unsupported, and does not claim to support the FT-817ND, it appears to work, although I have not used it a lot.

If you just need a program to help you manage the memories in the FT-817, then I suggest that you try 817-Mem, written by F5BUD.

Ingnore what some diehard VHF/UHF SSB operators say - the FT-817/FT-818 a perfectly capable performer at these frequencies. After 65 SOTA-activations and other outdoor operations like IOTA, WWFF I had to reduce some addional weight of my „go-bag“. I presume there’s a take off for the green wire to tell the 817 not to charge the pack when an external 12v is aplied?The battery is in a hard plastic case, which protects the lipo cells, it’s about 3"x5"x1" and weighs 10. Just use a piece of thin felt or thick paper under the base of the key, to avoid scratching the paint.

Before I post that video link, I’ll tell you there are companies like Bioenno (Chinese cells) and Dakota Lithium (A123 cells) selling lithium iron phosphate packs. Again, there isn't a huge difference in loudness between compressor on and compressor off, due to the AGC effect. See the AT range of antennas in HF Mobile Antennas, these have been specially designed for single band use with the FT-817.He can also charge a single cell at a 4,2V source (harvesting from an old cell phone power bank for example) in emergency situations. This is actually a safety issue because, in addition to the normal charger, the FT817 implements a trickle charger and while Windcamp advises against leaving the battary connected if external power is applied, this would have been a much easier and safer solutiuon. The presence of the BATT signal to the software should lock out enabling charge and disable it if it was selected. The FT-817/FT-818 has a wide voltage range but you want to avoid a battery that gives around the extremes of this.
