I was disappointed when the first POV change happened because I wanted to stay with the first ballerina’s story - I found the second POV to be lacking - and I felt like the ending was a bit too neat for the overall darker tone of the rest of the novel. Both describe their perceptions of their past and present – starting with when they first entered the NAB.

I read this book I’m one sitting, I just had to know what had happened 5 years ago and how this would all end.I understand the issues that she had, but the way she treated people throughout the story just rubbed me the wrong way. You start out thinking poor Sylvie and wanting to know what happened but as it progresses, you realise that you need to know all sides of the story to understand the true tale of events. Melanie, 36, met Mick, 79, in 2014 when she was engaged and he was in a long-term relationship with US fashion designer L’Wren Scott.

I wanted to learn more about the inner life of a ballerina, and some of that is in there (insecurities, etc. Hamrick says she wanted to give readers a good time, but also a view of what the ballet is like “behind the gilded curtain” — a world that presents as pristine and perfect.There are often more rivalries than friendships in art as competitive as ballet, so when you find these true friends – it's essential to hold on to them and treat them like the unique jewel they are.
