About this deal

I looked at the equations for volume of hemisphere and cone but do not seem to fit the shape of the crater. The crater length does indeed vary proportionally to the vertical height, but the crater depth appears to have no relationship whatsoever with the height (therefore the entry speed). Over a long period of time, small and non-explosive eruptions may fill a volcaniccrater with new material. Manicouagan in Quebec, Canada; Sudbury in Ontario, Canada; Ries Crater in Germany, and Chicxulub on the Yucatan coast in Mexico.

Ordinary merchant’s sand was finally chosen as the impact material, it was easy to level and held its shape well. How will studying an impact crater give you information about the collision, even if the meteorite is no longer there? Most meteors burn up in the atmosphere as “ shooting stars” before ever colliding with the surface of the Earth.

Now, while all golfers are prone to hyperbole, Shepard, who was commander of Nasa's Apollo 14 mission, could well have hit his ball that far on 6 February 1971 - despite only using a makeshift six iron that he had fashioned out of a collapsible tool designed to scoop lunar rock samples, and which he had sneaked aboard in a sock. This could be due to the fact that the ball might fall differently right at the start of its drop, or the fact that the ball did not have enough kinetic energy to displace the sand grains.

This first experiment is a fairly simple one, however it is necessary – it will serve as a test for the equipment and methods used. A second team, reporting in the 4 September PRL, recreated a variety of lunar crater shapes and examined the relationship between shape and energy of impact. They found that the geophysical rule of thumb for depth and diameter was approximately true, even though glass is nothing like moon rock, and the steel ball was hitting with much less energy than a meteorite. The ball could then be filled with plasticine and reassembled with very thin sticky tape, so as not to alter the shape of the ball. Once you have sufficient reputation you will be able to comment on any post; instead, provide answers that don't require clarification from the asker. This meant that the ball skipped across the sand, further than expected – as shown on the graph above. I would challenge any club golfer to go to their local course and try to hit a six-iron, one-handed, with a one-quarter swing out of an unraked bunker.
