This publishing policy, however, was changed in the late 1990s, as the Oor Wullie editors seem to have felt that this strategy was focusing too much on traditional Scottish symbols. Following the 80th anniversary in 2016, additional annuals of Oor Wullie were issued for 2016 and 2018, breaking from the biennial pattern. But what is perhaps more, Oor Wullie gives its readers enough room to create their own little Auchenshoogle. New strips were eventually commissioned from Tom Lavery, followed by Peter Davidson and Robert Nixon. This, however, does not mean that Oor Wullie has become less interesting or that it is not just as playful today – with new digital means of communication. The expression by jing was, for example, included in the poem “Halloween” by Robert Burns from 1785. But Wullie is still wearing his black dungarees and old shoes, and the stories still begin and end with an image of Wullie’s old bucket that gives the comic strips their unique narrative frame. The expression occurs in Oor Wullie in varying orthographic representations: Help ma boab, help mah bob, help mah boab and help m’ bob. C. Thomson has also published a series of compilation books featuring The Broons and Oor Wullie on alternate pages. In some of these, the family had a picture of Granpaw on their wall, which could do certain actions, such as wagging its finger at the children. The sketch revolved around Paw's naivety in the modern world and his inability to move with the times, not even realising that his entire offspring are the product of an affair Maw was having with a farmer.
