The Beurer Wake Up Light WL50 is designed to gently rouse you in a simulated sunrise, and definitely helped make our experience of jumping out of bed a lot easier. The clock cycles through 20 brightness settings over 30 minutes, to wake you up, but there are also two bird songs if you think you’ll need an additional alarm.You simply choose between a light fading to bright or (our favourite) a full coloured sunrise effect, which blends the colours of the sun together along the whole length of the lamp using gradient technology. We definitely didn’t need a noise to wake us up, though, as the light is very bright and mimics the colours of a real sunrise. We loved using it throughout the day too, setting endless different colours and even a softly flickering candlelight effect.

The idea is that you set an alarm for that time, and in the run-up to that happening, the light from the lamp will gradually grow. Not only will it rouse you in the most gentle and natural way possible – brightening 30 minutes before your alarm, but it will also help lull you to sleep. As it’s larger than a traditional clock, the light is much brighter, which we found helped to wake us far more effectively.Some of these are rather strange (waking to the sound of a steam train is an off experience), but there are lots of calming options as well, which can gently fade in to ease you into wakefulness. Equipped with FM auto-tuning, thirty radio memories and a built-in Bluetooth speaker, you can also use the aux input to play your own music if you fancy it. Instead, there are 16 million colour combinations and various schedules so the lights will turn on and off to suit at specific times during the day. The other two sounds, the chimes and the beeps, were okay, but a bit harsh for my personal tastes: I am NOT a morning person.
