About this deal

The compound thins out during the initial use to make it easier for users to apply it on the CPU IHS.

Thermal paste can go by many names, such as "thermal compound," "thermal grease," or "TIM" (Thermal Interface Material), but they all have the same purpose — to help keep your chip cool by ensuring that heat passes efficiently from the CPU to the cooler. It's also a good practice to open up these pre-built PCs to check if they spilled any liquid metal on the motherboard or other components. Remember, we're merely trying to fill the gaps between the CPU IHS and the CPU cooler's contact plate. This will make sure you're not spilling over any extra liquid metal outside the IHS, thereby saving yourself a lot of trouble. This means you can use this paste while using sub-zero cooling methods to achieve extremely high overclocking speeds. This is suitable for use across different CPUs on the market including even high-performance HEDT chips like an AMD Ryzen Threadripper. A couple hours later the MX-6 arrived and I'm certainly not in the mood fo reapply paste if it's not going to be a 5-10C improvement.

While some pastes have to be renewed regularly to prevent drying out, ARCTIC’s thermal pastes offer a very long shelf life. A compound with relatively ‘normal’ viscosity known to thermal paste application as well as good stability during application. The differences would be slim when compared to the overall cooler solution and would vary with each installation. The Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut has a viscosity of 140-190 pas, which means it's more of a paste than a liquid. And yeah they were not sponsored by/for the frame, but they repeatedly were sponsored by/for the thermal paste. The application involves dropping small quantities of liquid metal on the CPU IHS and carefully spreading it using a piece of cotton. Thermal compounds might always be compared and debated over, but the simple fact remains: PC system building needs thermal compounds to effectively dissipate thermal loads.

If it has already dried up, it is recommendable to wipe it off using a cloth with lime like the newly released MX Cleaner. But if you're too worried about applying using that method, then the bundled stencil and spreader make it very easy to get things done.

Overall, each compound was evaluated and stressed over a regimen cycle covering six hours with two different coolers and different mounting tensions, making for no less than 90 hours of compound testing for our initial round of tests. In our massive best thermal pastes roundup this year (with 90+ pastes tested), we noted that Arctic MX-5 had a thermal conductivity of 6. Yep, I agree, but the thinking being GPU thermal paste updates are a bit more specific and not necessarily as user-friendly as CPU cooling applications, so we will likely be focusing on them as a standalone article with some reference back here.
