About this deal

Although very much grounded in reality in that the fictional lives of her characters unfolded among the very real events of recent history, Winman’s bestselling debut When God Was a Rabbit was tinged with just the faintest hint of magical realism – it was up to the reader whether to take the talking rabbit God at face value or instead explain his powers of speech away as the whimsy of a haunted child’s overactive imagination.

Ever since she had entered hr ninetieth year Marvellous Ways spent a good part of her day waiting, and not for death, as you might assume, given her age. As we finish the novel my level of involvement became obvious as I went through a missing-them-already stage. I don't not recommend it but I warn you that you'll need to pay more attention than I did or you too will be finishing this book saying WTF?Marvellous is old, wise, and knows how to be herself and not bend to others rumours and opinions or actions. Certainly Marvellous, a spry woman who swims naked in the creek near her caravan, who lies a candle in the half-sunken church that sits in an island between the waters and who lives and eat off the land that is her home and a character in itself, has had reason enough to give up on life on many occasions. But in this book, it also felt magical, like I could feel the magic of the story through it’s writing. When timid Jersey crab Armen (Michael Cera) meets bold tourist sea crab Ramona (Keke Palmer), it causes shell-shocking tension in the community.

One that seeps right into your soul, like the water from Marvellous' creek running over your welly boots, and makes you feel as squelchy as the mud she sinks down into when collecting cockles. He brings with him a letter he promised to deliver to the father of a dead soldier he met, when the man was in his final hours. After getting used to the style ( no "talking" marks anywhere in the book - which totally annoyed me) I wanted to see where everything tied in.There are so many things I could pick out but who can forget the beautiful image of Paper Jack who had a ‘stowaway poet that lived in his soul’ who ‘gave that ship [a sailing ship] his heart for safekeeping’. She is a very memorable character and you leave it feeling as if you’ve learned something valuable from Marvellous about how it is to think about life, have hope, dream big and live a simple, pleasurable life in a little part of Cornish paradise. She does this through the powers of storytelling; slowly spinning the tales of the three great loves of her life. I began to feel as though I was wading through treacle after a while, with lots of bits like this, for example: "The hamlet was eerily deserted.

Of 'dirt grass moor and sand, a whole history of the Peninsula laid down one on top of the other, like fossils, like prayers. The writing wasn't my cup of tea, particularly Marvellous's chapters, it was hard to understand what was going on.Brexit, Winman says, "was all done under the guise of British exceptionalism — you know, that we're 'better'. Further Reading: As well as When God Was A Rabbit, we recommend The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis and/or Nine Days by Toni Jordan if you enjoy immersing in some engaging characters. In this novel, as well as her previous novel When God was a Rabbit, Sarah Winman shows us the magic of everyday life. Everyone needs to spend some time with Marvellous Ways and listen to her stories - the stories which make up the story of her long life. These factors — and others — contributed to When God Was a Rabbit becoming an international bestseller, a favourite of critics, booksellers and book clubs.
