About this deal

Timbre: Kato > Free 2 Classic (Kato sounds more correct with vocals by a country mile, but is arguably worse for hip hop as subbass rumble is less) Free2 Classic earbuds also have touch controls like Mini Pro earbuds. These controls are easy to use, except for the Free2 Classic earbuds there are no ANC or gaming modes. Here are the controls for Free2 Classic: Furthermore, the Free2 classic still had enough refinement to make audiophile recordings like Macy Gray’s “Stripped” sound good, providing decent soundstage and separation between the instrumental and vocal parts, along with good detail and air for the price point. No harshness up top either.

The Free2 Classic provide an ideal blend of features at a price point that’s quite enticing. Sure, they may not deliver on all fronts, but we honestly feel that most will be plenty satisfied with them. They’re compact, water reisistant and generously priced. If they’re in your budget, try them out! If you can stretch your budget a bit more, go with the Mini Pro! The SoundPEATS Free2 Classic are tightly sealed up from dirt and water ingress. In fact, they’re given an IPX8 waterproof rating. This means they can withstand high pressure water jets, and you can submerge them in water to 1 meter depth. In reality, this means you can take them outside in any kind of weather, or even wear them while you shower or swim. In both instances, you need not worry about their integrity; they’ve been rigorously designed for water resistance. Headphones can look great, have good charging and fit perfectly (more on these elements later), but the fact is, if they sound like crap, it’s not a good experience, ever. The charging case has no remaining power. The case can’t turn off the earbuds if the case battery is dead. SoundPEATS are obviously not first timers at creating earbuds, and it shows. The units themselves are responsive to touch controls without being over-responsive when moving them about. This is a real bugbear of mine in other units!

Power On: To automatically power on, open the lid of the charging case and take out both earbuds. To manually power them on, press and hold either side for 1.5 seconds. Bassy, v-shape signature, with just enough vocal clarity for me to not mind too much. No peaky treble. Big bass bloat. Great for commute and not much else. In terms of getting these wet when hitting the gym or getting caught in the rain, you won’t have any concern with the Free2 Classics as they come with an IPX4 rating. What this means is it can handle high-pressure water jets or be submerged up to 1 meter deep if you wanted to wear these when swimming.

The Free2 Classic earbuds come with a compact charging case with a light indicator to let you know the battery life of the case and earbuds. Note: the earbuds don’t have a light to indicate its battery levels. You must rely on the case for the earbud’s battery life. A flashing blue light means the charging case is charging. A solid blue light means the charging case is fully charged. If you get a red light, it means you must charge the earbuds and case. That said, while it’s noticeable, it didn’t impact usability, and by the way, you can use the buds together or each one on its own. After weeks of testing these earbuds, we found the sound quality to be good in both. Though you can’t adjust the sound quality with an app in either of these Soundpeats earbuds, you can activate ANC in the Mini Pro which will enhance the sound quality a little more than the Free2 Classic. Both earbuds’ touch controls are sensitive. You really must hold the earbud for more than the allotted time to activate the control. For instance, you are supposed to touch the right earbud for 1.5 seconds to move to the next song. We had to hold our finger on the earbud for more than 2 seconds before the song changed. It’s not a big deal but you need to learn how the touch controls work before you start using the earbuds. If not, you will get frustrating using them especially when out for a run or walk. The buds should fit into your ear canal with the logos facing right side up. The tips of the earbuds should feel comfortable in your ears without feeling any pressure. Also, make sure you have the correct fitting eartips. In terms of sound quality, the SoundPEATS Free2 earphones don’t exactly have the best sound quality, they have an acceptable amount of stereo effect and a powerful dynamic range for all types of music with excellent treble, mid-tones, and bass. Equipped with 6mm dynamic drivers that give you surprisingly clean sound with little to no noise when the ultra-low frequencies let you know where each singer was positioned, the intensity of their voice, and instrument discrimination was good and everything felt very balanced. So the Free2 Classic was great in that regard.

The touch controls also seemed to have just the right amount of sensitivity, so I didn’t have to tap over and over to get the earbuds to do what I wanted them to do. Clear Pairing: place both earbuds in the charging case and hold both buttons for 10 seconds when the LEDs start flashing red and white twice. This means you have reset the earbuds.Mini Pro earbuds also come with dust proof microphones and 7 Hours of single playtime on an initial charge. The earbuds are charged using the supplied USB-C cable. It will take you about 1.5 hours to full charge the Mini Pro earbuds which you will do using the charging case.
