As every cancer patient knows, life is short, and there’s no point putting off your dreams for some distant future day that might never come. I fulfilled my childhood dream to write a novel and I’m so proud of it. When will you write yours? Simply put, I think bald women are beautiful. Jada Pinkett-Smith at the Oscars? Stunning. Megan Fox and Natalie Portman with shaved heads? Gorgeous. Write! Simply put, your book won’t write itself. I make notes on my phone whenever I think of good material, so that when I sit down at my computer, I have a starting point. If you chip away at it gradually, you’ll have a first draft before you know it. Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia (CIA) is when the hair falls out following chemotherapy. It is one of the most visibly distressing side effects of commonly administered chemotherapeutic drugs. With Telogen Effluvium more hairs than usual move into the telogen (resting) phase and shed, so you may notice more hair falling out than usual. Telogen Effluvium is often caused by a physical or psychological trigger and often resolves itself spontaneously.I was offered a book deal with HarperCollins in Germany shortly thereafter, but the UK deal took a little longer, with Brexit, a pandemic and a series of rejections thrown into the mix. But in late 2020, I signed with Pan Macmillan, and this year I finally get to share my story with the world. Trichotillomania is a psychological condition, where you cannot stop pulling out hair, which leads to hair loss. The most common places that people pull hair from are the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes. I’ve written a diary since I was a little girl, but for some reason, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 29, I stopped. There’s an entry from June 2012 where I told myself I’d be just fine, then nothing, until I finished treatment eight months later. Alopecia Totalis is characterised by a total loss of all scalp hair. For some people, the hair loss begins as typical Alopecia Areata patches. However, some people experience such rapid hair loss that patches are not seen before most of the scalp hair is lost. Alopecia Universalis By the time active treatment ended, I wanted to meet someone, but was unsure what to write on my dating profile. I settled on the truth, listing myself as a ‘single, bald (possibly infertile) female’.There is currently no cure for Alopecia Areata, however, there are a variety of treatments on offer: unfortunately, none are guaranteed to work. Many people experience spontaneous regrowth without treatment. Treatments are more likely to be effective in milder cases of Alopecia Areata, with small patches of hair loss. Find a writing community. Writing is a lonely business and it’s easy to throw in the towel. Instead of sharing your work with friends and family (who will only say nice things), find a group of fellow writers who will give you honest, constructive criticism and encouragement. Please note, many people experience forms of Alopecia Areata that are somewhere between Alopecia Totalis and Alopecia Universalis, so can lose some but not all body hair, or some but not all facial hair.
