Nicola: So, I think that's very true. There's this idea in health and nutrition at the moment that you should only eat x amount. You shouldn't eat foods x, y, and z. You need to exercise every day. Nicola: So, it's kind of all in the name. Hypothalamic amenorrhea is amenorrhea or a missing period. Typically, it means 3 months or more is kind of the standard that's used. And it's of hypothalamic origin. So, the hypothalamus is a major control centre in your brain. It takes in inputs from all over your body including information from your stomach in terms of the mechanical receptors that tell it how much you've eaten, various hormones that are generated as you eat. So, if you eat fat or protein or carbs, different hormones are generated. Those travel through your bloodstream to your hypothalamus. It takes in information about your stress levels, in terms of your cortisol levels or it can sense the beta-endorphins.I did functional medicine tests, convinced there was something else I could correct to avoid the need to gain weight. Those tests were indeed helpful, as they confirmed that I did not have some other issue like hypothyroidism or PCOS that could impact cycles. They also made me realize that I was not actually full of natural energy as I thought, but rather I was chronically stressed and running on cortisol. I also could see where I had several nutritional deficiencies, likely due to not eating enough (I didn’t realize how few calories I was truly getting because my “clean,” fiber-filled diet was full of voluminous foods that only looked like a lot of food… and also gave me my digestive issues— again, this all deserves another post).

Menstrual cups are an alternative to sanitary pads and tampons. The cup is made from silicone and you put it inside your vagina. Andrew: It is our pleasure, and I've got to say, "Wow." So you've got a PhD in biology from MIT. Let's delve into that a little bit. Obviously, things were off, but after a few months of making minor changes and trying some supplements, I knew what I had to do. I had to go all in, but I was terrified. I also was about to leave NYC and do some solo travel for an indefinite period of time. Upon reflection, this was one of the absolute best things I could have done for my recovery, even though I wanted to leave for other reasons. But the travel and uprooting allowed me to detachment from the life I had been living that held me tied to my old identity. It also got me to relax my rules around food and open my eyes to what true health and wellbeing looks like. You feel unwell in yourself (for example, headaches, changes in your vision, have lost or gained weight).

Feeling broken and disheartened, I looked at every single resource pertaining to HA to get some answers. And let me tell you, THIS BOOK HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED. Some of the other birth control methods, such as the hormonal intrauterine device (IUD), implant, and injection can also result in amenorrhea. Andrew: Well, I've got to say the computational part would see you in good stead to look through the mess of some studies and to tease out the wheat from the chaff as they say. Andrew: Too often particularly… I mean I'm certainly not including myself in this group, but elite athletes talk about the lean muscle mass and yet it's the fat that will enable them to indeed have a period. So, there's got to be this nurturing period. And as you say, you've basically got to nurture your hypothalamus.Attention! Please make sure to only consider personal training AFTER recovering at least 3 periods. (http://noperiod.info/wait-three-cycles) Nicola: It also secretes ADH, antidiuretic hormone, which controls the water balance. It can also adjust where your body is expending energy, so how much energy it's using to keep you warm. So, it's basically a master regulator in the sense that it takes in all these inputs and sends out outputs. Psychological stress. Not having periods when your peers are having theirs can be stressful, especially for young people who are transitioning into adulthood. Uterine scarring. Asherman's syndrome, a condition in which scar tissue builds up in the lining of the uterus, can sometimes occur after a dilation and curettage (D&C), cesarean section or treatment for uterine fibroids. Uterine scarring prevents the normal buildup and shedding of the uterine lining. Primary and secondary amenorrhea can occur for numerous reasons. Some causes are natural, while others are medical conditions that need to be treated.

HA is rife and growing throughout the community. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is a condition in which your body produces more of the male hormone androgen. Due to this hormonal imbalance, ovulation stops or becomes irregular, and arrested follicles (cysts) form in the ovaries. This results in a missed period. Together with androgens, other hormones such as insulin can also be disrupted by PCOS.
