About this deal

K L Slater is truly a masterful storyteller! This book was paced perfectly, we kept being fed breadcrumbs of information... just enough to satisfy me and make me wanting more... I really enjoyed how the secrets were revealed, I liked trying to figure out what was going on... another well-crafted thriller from a brilliant author! I smugly thought I knew which direction the author was going with this one, yet I was thrilled to discover I was dead wrong, surprised that K.L. Slater had a far better, much more satisfying ending than I could've conjured up in my imagination. The Mistake by K.L. Slater is a psychological thriller that is told by alternating the story between Rose in the current time and telling what happened sixteen years before when her brother had disappeared. The alternating timelines was extremely easy to follow along with in this book being clearly marked as to which you are reading. Being the second book I've read by K.L. Slater I was expecting the writing to be good in this one and was happy to see when I was correct. But was it too early to allow a nine year old girl to walk just a short distance down to her friends house? Sixteen years on, Rose still blames herself for Billy’s death. How could she have failed to protect her little brother?

The Narrator: An absolutely addictive and unputdownable

MY THOUGHTS: This is not, as the blurb assured me it would be, 'the most gripping psychological thriller you will read this year. Nor did I find the twist breathtaking. In fact, it was pretty predictable. The story is told both in the past and in the present day. As the story unfolds we learn about the events leading up to Billy's disappearance and death. We meet all the players, we see how easily Rose was manipulated and controlled, we see how this affected her relationships and her self esteem, then we see Billy go missing. In the present day, we see Rose as an unmarried single woman. Her parents are dead and she is basically on her own. The the discovery turns her life upside down. The story really shines in the second half. The story seamlessly shifts between the past and the present which keeps you guessing about what will happen next in both the timelines. It’s like reading two stories at one, each with its own twists and each tied together by a common thread.I would like to thank Bookouture/K.L. Slater and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This is a fast-paced plot, well-developed characters that builds to a high climax. I love the twist in the end that I didn’t see coming. Highly recommended.

Big fan of K.L. Slater... this book did not disappoint! This is a fast-paced psychological thriller that hooks you in from the start. A whole lot of twists and tension in this emotional novel, with a little creep factor added in for some really great reading. Missing was my first book by K.L. Slater but it definitely won't be my last. Missing is an absolutely gripping thriller that will keep your heart rate elevated throughout. What's the thing almost all of us fear the most? That someone we love will be taken and missing or that they are gone for good. That's what Missing is about and it takes the reader on quite the scary journey! I thought I had the mystery solved but I was wrong as the story takes twists and turns throughout. Slater weaves such a great story that I found myself looking for time to read during a busy few days and thinking about the book when I wasn't able to read. That's when you know you're reading a great book! This is the fourth book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'The Girl She Wanted', 'The Widow' and 'The Marriage' which I highly recommend. You can feel Josie's fear as she is searching for her daughter, and I felt sorry for her and yet...This was a very gripping book, and K.L. Slater's descriptions of Rosie's relationship with her manipulative boyfriend were chilling and came across as very realistic. It always starts off as something small, just a bit of control... and then you realize your opinions and thoughts no longer really matter. It was a book I found hard to put down and finished in only two sittings. I'm really looking forward to reading even more of the author's work! Sixteen years ago Rose's little brother was killed, after that her life changed forever. Now she's a librarian who spends her days looking over her shoulder. She doesn't have much of a life. She's either at the library, her home--a place that keeps herself prisoner, or looking after her elderly neighbor. When her neighbor has to be hospitalized for a few days, she decides to clean his place up. While doing so she comes across something that will put her life into a spin. She starts looking at things a little differently. There was plenty to like in this novel and the more I write the more I feel I am perhaps a little harsh with a 3 rating. Sixteen years later, Rose has never resumed a normal life. Her visits to her elderly neighbor Ronnie are the extent of her social life. Ronnie has always been there, and after he loses his dear wife, she helps him out every once in awhile. When he falls ill and is taken to the hospital, she feels guilty as if she may not have been helping him enough. His house could use a thorough cleaning. What she finds as she tidies up will change her life and throw everything she thought she knew into doubt: did Ronnie have something to do with the death of her little brother?

Missing by K L Slater | Waterstones

Rose is bereft of her parents, she lost her brother who went missing whilst she had taken him out to fly his kite, she blames herself. Samuel Barlow, the next-door neighbor, had been charged and was serving time in prison. Samuel’s mum, Maggie had lied to the police to cover for her son after murder of the schoolboy, The story is told in several timelines starting in 1993 when eight year old Jimmy Bennett is deliberately trapped and subsequently dies inside a disused factory for which Samuel Barlow is convicted. Twenty five years on Samuel is due for release on parole, a huge cause of concern to Jimmy’s sister Josie, a cafe owner and single mum to eight year old Ivy. Maggie, Samuel’s mother is similarly concerned partly because he is now a prison hardened but more than capable of playing games and he was obsessed with with Josie when growing up. Will Josie and Maggie‘s concerns prove to be justified? The story is told mainly from Lucie's perspective, over two timelines - now, with Grace missing, and before, detailing Lucie's life prior to Blake. There is the occasional brief chapter from an unknown person which, I believe, added nothing of value. The theme of a missing child has been done before a lot but what sets Finding Grace apart from the rest is the engaging writing style and the clever plot twists. The story pulls you right in and simply does not let go. Grace seems to have disappeared into thin air. There's no ransom note or phone call .. she's just ... gone. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a free electronic ARC of this novel, received in exchange for an honest review.
