Got to mention on a lighter note the Mother from hell,Phyllis,is a classic written character, I couldn’t stand her ( the love to hate was strong ) and as for Judy, well you will be shouting at the book about her…. I opened this book expecting to be pleasantly surprised by this "family" - like perhaps all my preconceptions of what the book would be about would be debunked. But all my predictions were correct, and even then I was disappointed by the writing.

Also, in this book there is an extract from her future book and she clearly writes the word "noice" instead of "noise." Grammar and spelling mistakes in this book made it completely unreadable. The actual story and characters are mediocre in my opinion. I didn't connect with any of them. I had no sympathy for them and seeing Michael escape at the end, starting a new life with his new girlfriend and baby didn't gall me in a way that I think might have been intended.

This is probably the worst book I have ever read. The writing was completely awful, there was no character development, and the only suspense and mystery in the whole book was completely predictable by the end of the first 10 chapters (which is not kind of bad, considering it's 156 chapters long and it's marketed as a suspense/thriller novel). I was only thrilled when it was over. Although Cole has never been one to provoke thought, or make my mind surpass its small limits, sometimes a crime novel is something I savour for its simplicity. The narrative covers a wide spectrum of human emotions, including a very caring (dare I say loving) attitude within family life - to extreme violence within the criminal fraternity, demonstrated in particular by the main character in the plot. The plot was too simple for a suspense/thriller novel. There were so many little off-shoots that the plot could have taken that would have been mildly interesting and suspenseful. Unfortunately, the author took none of these and we were left with the unfulfilled hope that the story would become complex and live up to what it was marketed as.

Betrayal is purely and simply the everyday story of criminal folk, from 1981 until 2016. They are a large East End family, headed by Reeva, a fiery Irishwoman, who has five sons and one daughter, all by different fathers, and all of mixed blood. stars. This is the first Martina Cole book I’ve read through a recommendation so not my usual style.

That said, this was still quite a good story with the right balance of good and bad, - and bloody evil.

This book was repetitive. It said the same thing over and over. Everything was repeated. Sometimes things were repeated twice right next to each other, in the same paragraph. It would be one thing to repeat things using different language, but it was as if the author copied whole segments of prose and randomly pasted them all over the book a bunch of times.Aiden O'Hara has always looked out for his family, ever since he was a wee laddie. His mother has something of a reputation and many children to different fathers. Aiden is fiercely protective and soon makes himself a name with the local face. Drugs, prostitution and murder are all things Aiden finds himself caught up in but it pays the bills and keeps his family safe. However as Aiden's reputation grows his arrogance and unpredictability grows with it turning Aiden from protector to a possible danger to his family and business. Short, snappy chapters keep the pace of the story moving so not to get bored. This wasn’t an issue for me - I prefer shorter chapters. I find that I retain more of the story that way and don’t get bogged down with unnecessary content. Martina has the skill of creating characters that drive you crazy. Love and hate are so close in emotion and I felt this a lot with Aidan. I loved the way he fought from a young age to provide for his family as essentially the man of the house, to make a name for himself and ensure that his family was taken care of. What I didn’t like were how the power slowly starts to corrupt him and with that comes unsavoury behaviour towards both his girlfriend and his family. I have read many gangland books inc all of the authors previous but got to say this for me was probably the grittiest, hard hitting and genuinely brutal one yet An excellent story, as befits Martina Cole. My only reservation is the prolific use of the most common four-letter risqué word, extended to seven and used too frequently as an adjective to numerous different words. In mitigation, however, this is perhaps the sort of language used by low life within the criminal community, of which Martina has a personal knowledge.

finally, i’d just like to point out that the author (a white woman) used a racial slur for no visible reason, where it could be easily omitted. I really can't think why anyone would want to read this, unless it's for the vicarious thrill of observing violent and unpleasant people.

It is believed that when the paths of both of them will cross, they will be a perfect match for each other and it is only a matter of time before this happens. Cathy is beautiful, tough and clever and Eamonn is strong and powerful. Hence, if the two meet they are not going to run away again and will hopefully lead a happy life.
