That would make more sense to me on a Balanced profile. As it is, this Balanced mode is very close to the Quiet mode in terms of GPU performance and even fan noise. Finally, for biometrics, you get a finger-sensor in the power button here, but there’s no IR capable camera. Some support guy posted a KBD firmware update to overwrite default pride profile with plain blue and it worked well. This mode is impressive as well, with fan noise of up to 40 dB. The GPU scores are within 80% of what the platform delivers on Performance, but the CPU is significantly limited by the aggressive TDP cap of just 25W, and that’s shown in the scores.The panel on this review unit is the former, the fixed-refresh 165Hz option from BOE. The same panel is also available on the 2022 Legion 5i Pro. The AMD-powered Lenovo Legion 7 is a top-notch gaming laptop for enthusiasts who want next-generation gaming in a mobile form factor. The RGB-powered laptop screams gaming in every way through its well-thought-out design, from the surrounding lights and keycaps to its well-placed vents and speakers. Across all of our performance tests, this laptop achieved scores that put it well above almost every entry in our best gaming laptops list. In our 3DMark tests, the Legion 7 scored 52,201 in Night Raid, 23,811 in Fire Strike and 10,709 in Time Spy whereas the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 (the device in our number one spot) only achieved 43,645, 21,211 and 9,333 in each test respectively. I see no reason not to have this OC in place. Lenovo supports it and it doesn’t significantly add too much thermal load. On top of that, the results are noticeable. For the remainder of my testing, this OC was left on. Balance with Legion Ai allows the GPU to run at up to 175Wjust like on Performance mode, but with the same kind of noise levels. Regular Balance without Legion Ai mode runs at lower power settings, but also quieter fans.

We need to push for same stuff for Legion for sure. I could never imagine myself tearing my new laptop apart so fast to pull out those flex cables for side and vents LEDs, i totally cant wrap my head around the fact that we have no control in BIOS over that crap show and have to jump through the hoops. Maybe you can use this info in some of your articles to catch some of Lenovo attention, you guys are big and one of the best on review scene, it can make good circles on the water for em to hear and fix it finally. Lenovo equipped this Legion 7 with an Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080 with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, alongside an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, which is an impressive combination. Every competitor mentioned here also sports an RTX 3080, except for the Razer Blade 15, which has a 3070 with 8GB GDDR6 VRAM. The Legion 7 is the top configuration in a gaming-oriented series, so let’s look at some games now. For connectivity, there’s Wireless 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 through an Intel-based Killer 1675i chip on this laptop, as well as 2.5 Gb LAN. the wireless proved fast and reliable during my time with the laptop. The last difference to mention is the result of the Quiet modes. CPU performance is so much worse for the Ryzen model in this mode. It’s definitely because of the lower power limit. The good news though is the fan noise is better than the Intel version in this mode.Advanced Optimus worked fine for the most part. But my unit suffered some stuttering on some games, such as Battlefield V. Andrei also noticed this on the Asus S17 he recently reviewed. The fix was the same – switching to discrete graphics only resolves the issue. It’s easy enough to do, but it’s annoying to have this issue. On Shadow of the Tomb Raider (highest settings, 1080p), the Legion 7 hit 97 frames per second during the benchmark at native resolution. This beats out the Alienware x17 and the Razer Blade 15 ’s 77 and 80 fps . However, the MSI GE76 Raider outperformed the Legion 7 at 106 fps. At its native 2560 x 1600, the Legion benchmarked at 71 fps, more than Razer Blade 15’s 54 fps at 1440p.

Spec-wise, the 2022 Legion 7i is built on the latest and most powerful Intel and Nvidia hardware available to date. The Core i9-12900HX is the top-performance mobile processor in Intel’s Alder Lake 12th-gen platform, with 16 Cores and 24 Threads. It is a hybrid design with 8 High-Performance and dual-threaded Cores, and 8 extra Efficiency cores, which work together in the various loads. The design and thermal module of this Legion allow the processor to run at up to ~115W of sustained power in demanding CPU loads. The laptop is thermally limited on Performance mode, and then aggressively power capped on the other modes, so there’s no proper middle-ground profile for those interested in running sustained CPU loads at average temperatures. You’ll have to go with the Performance mode for any serious work, but that means you’ll have to accept the high CPU temperatures, which isn’t ideal. I surely recommend opting for some sort of stand or cooling pad while running demanding CPU loads on this laptop. For starters, let’s look at how the CPU handles demanding sustained loads in the Cinebench R15 loop test. It actually delivers and stabilizes on those exact PL1 settings above on each of the profiles.
In short, excellent results in Performance mode, especially with the OC. There’s little reason not to OC, considering there’s no throttling either. Finally, here’s how this Ryzen 9 5900HX implementation compares to other same-tier models on the market, both Intel and AMD. This is a solid Ryzen 9 implementation here and only outmatched on the AMD side by the higher-power R9 in the ROG G15 Advantage. As for the 3070Ti 150W version of this laptop, I’ve tested that dGPU implementation in the 2022 Legion 5i Pro chassis, and here’s a brief comparison between the two (with more the follow in a future article) – you should expect similar GPU results for the RTX 3070Ti Legion 7i, but higher CPU and combined scores, of course, with the HX platforms. We’d expect nothing less than an astounding performance from the Lenovo Legion 7 laptop, and its AMD Ryzen 7 5800H and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 did not disappoint.
