This single malt whisky is from Japan’s oldest distillery, Yamazaki of Suntory. It has been aged in Bordeaux wine barrels, which give it distinct red fruit notes, in addition to ex-Sherry casks and the native Mizunara oak. A refreshing nose of strawberry, dried cranberry, toffee, cereal and a hint of incense, which comes from the Mizunara oak. Sweet and creamy on the palate, with spiced notes of vanilla oak, butter brioche and lime zest bitterness. Alc 43%

Made from a combination of Scottish malt and Canadian grain in the Chugoku distillery in the town of Togouchi, this blended whisky is aged in an abandoned railway tunnel. It features a slightly peated nose of salted caramel, coconut, citrus peel and sweet spices, light-weighted and saline on the palate, smooth and creamy, filled with ripe orchard fruits. Alc 40%

Hatozaki Pure Malt Whisky ‘Small Batch’ (46%, OB +/- 2023)

Hatozaki Small Batch Pure Malt is a vatting of 100% malt whiskies aged in bourbon casks, sherry casks and Japanese Mizunara casks. It is around 5 years old and produced in small batches (less than 20 casks). While the company is not exactly transparent about it, several retailers confirm our premonition: it contains some Japanese spirit but part of the whisky is imported from Scotland. After all the distillery only started in 2018. According to new regulations, such products cannot use the name Japanese whisky after April 1st 2024. The Akashi Sake Brewery is owned by the Yonezawa family. It is located in the city of Akashi – not to be mistaken with Akashi whisky from Eigashima. They make artisan sake since 1856. In the adjacent Kaikyо̄ distillery they produce gin and Hatozaki whisky. The name comes from the oldest stone lighthouse in Japan, a symbol of guidance. Named after the Hatozaki lighthouse in Akashi harbour, which is the oldest stone lighthouse in Japan. Its rich history and symbolism inspired the name for our whisky If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
