About this deal

Our Exposure Latitude test, which delves down into the deep shadows of the files doesn't show a big difference in the noise levels between the older camera and the new one. Our ISO Invariance test doesn't show much of a difference between shooting at base ISO and using a higher ISO setting, suggesting very little noise is being added by the camera. This give the option, when shooting high contrast scenes, to maintain your shutter speed and aperture but decrease ISO to retain more highlight information, without much of a noise penalty upon selectively brightening the Raw file. The Lumix GH5's electronic viewfinder sees a big jump in quality from the GH4's, up to a staggering 3,680,000-dot resolution and 0.76x magnification, while the vari-angle display has also been improved, with the 3.2-inch touchscreen featuring a resolution of 1,620,000 dots. The display also employs Panasonic’s WhiteMagic technology for increased brightness. SD Memory Card, SDHC Memory Card, SDXC Memory Card (Compatible with UHS-I / UHS-II UHS Speed Class 3 standard SDHC / SDXC Memory Cards) For us, handheld run and gun shooting without a gimbal is just too chancy, and the Lumix GH5 II has done nothing to change our minds.

The Micro Four Thirds format supports loads of adapted lenses, so you've got the flexibility to use modern lenses for a sharp, high contrast look, or go with vintage lenses for a more artistic style. We went with an antique Canon 50mm F1.2 for the sample clip above, captured at 24fps using the Cine2 profile. Its sensor and lens mount are Micro Four Thirds. The camera works with autofocus lenses fromOlympus, Panasonic, Sigma, and a few others, and has broad compatibility with manual focus lenses. It's not compatible with Panasonic's full-frame L-mount system, though, so you'll need to take a little care when shopping for glass.Expressive / Retro / Old Days / High Key / Low Key / Sepia / Monochrome / Dynamic Monochrome / Rough Monochrome* / Silky Monochrome* / Impressive Art / High Dynamic / Cross Process / Toy Effect / Toy Pop / Bleach Bypass / Miniature Effect** / Soft Focus* / Fantasy / Star Filter* / One Point Color / Sunshine* The GH5 II uses a new, more powerful battery: the DMW-BLK22. This is now rated at 2200mAh, giving 16Wh of capacity. Despite the increased capacity, Panasonic quotes essentially the same 410 shot-per-charge battery life figures (per CIPA) as the original GH5.

This section is based on our initial usage of the camera around its launch, and hence predates the rest of our testing and conclusions. With normal use, you can expect a charge to last for about 400 stills or around an hour of 4K video recording. This is a camera designed equally for stills and video, though in this latest version it’s the video capabilities that have received most attention. Nevertheless, with its 20MP sensor, fast burst mode and enhanced burst depth of over 108 raw files or more than 999 JPEGs, this is a camera that’s also very effective at stills and action photography.

As a result, the footage doesn't always look quite as sharp as its peers, but should be less susceptible to aliasing, which would be difficult to remove, where it occurs. As before, this is a very sensible, high quality result. Noticeably, the quality of the 60p footage is very similar to that of the 24p capture (with a touch more noise as a result of the faster shutter speed that's needed, meaning less light was captured, per frame). DR and Cinelike differences The Panasonic GH5 will deliver professional-quality, ultra-high-definition, smooth videos up to 4K 60p/50p internally. Additionally, the GH5 is capable of 4:2:2 10-bit 4K 30p/25p internal video recordings, as well as producing even more accurate colour reproduction for the first time as a digital interchangeable lens camera. The GH5 II will cost a few hundred more than the GH5, but arrives at a very similar price to the older camera when it was launched. We don't yet know if the GH5 will remain on sale, or for how long. If you feel like documenting the Northern Lights in Greenland, this camera will get the job done. Difference Panasonic cameras use different regions of the V-Log curve (red). The GH5 II uses the blue region, which sees it branded as V-Log L; matching the GH5 and 5S. But the it would still be cross-compatible if it used the larger region used by the BGH1.
