About this deal

Whilst the musical is no Six, it’s a great follow-up. It’s fun, poppy, light-hearted, and heart-warming – which is sometimes exactly what you want. The music, though not the most memorable, is aurally pleasing, and the story, though straightforward, is well-thought-out – with a fitting ending. Why do you think it is important to bring women’s history to the theatre and how do you think this show helps? If you have a Blue Badge you can park anywhere in Northgate Car Park free of charge. There are 9 non-reservable spaces close to the Theatre entrance. Visit Chichester District Council for other available car parks.

Want to transfer from a wheelchair into a theatre seat? Let us know in advance when you book and we can help you. Based on the award-winning children’s picture book by Kate Pankhurtst, Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World is a brand-new, pop musical from the producers of Six. Does she think we might be guilty of overloading the next generation with the responsibility to fix the mistakes of the past? “It’s something I think about more and more as the series has gone on, that it’s a throwaway thing to say, ‘You can change the world’ and a lot of pressure to put on them by asking how are you going to save the planet? But hopefully I break it down so it feels not too overwhelming.” Celebrated - and often forgotten - women from history are brought to life on stage, from Rosa Parks to Sacagawea, Amelia Earhart to Marie Curie, Mary Seacole to Frida Kahlo and Jane Austen, and Pankhurst's own relative Emmeline. Inquisitive heroine Jade breaks away from her class trip to the local museum to take a peek at the Gallery of Greatness. Audiences can join Jade in meeting these incredible and inspiring women from the past: from explorers and scientists to artists and secret agents, hear the stories of some of history's independent icons who really did change the world.Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World will be on tour in theatres in Southampton, Norwich, Liverpool, Aylesbury and Chichester from 6 th November 2021 to 16 th January 2022. Celebrated dramatist Chris Bush and Number 1 hit songwriter Miranda Cooper (Girls Aloud, Kylie Minogue) adapt suffragette descendent Kate Pankhurst’s award-winning picture book with music by Miranda Cooper and Jennifer Decilveo and direction by Amy Hodge.

Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World is produced by the Company that brought you the international hit musical ‘SIX’. Jade represents everyone that is living now that’s watching now and can speak to them by saying “Follow Your Dreams. If you want to achieve something then go for it”. It’s not like Six where they have like a competition – with this there’s no competitiveness.

Pankhurst’s books are now part of a canon that teaches young people about exemplary real women from history and the modern day, alongside Rebel Girls, Little People, Big Dreams, Little Leaders, This Little Trailblazer and countless more. There’s a bit of all the characters in me and because, as I say, it’s an essence of these characters, all the women in the show are bad ass, there’s no denying they are all amazing and fantastic. But Emmeline Pankhurst was just fierce and to have the guts to do what she did in that time, a little bit of that embeds in you and that’s what I want to take away from this show and that’s what we want the audience to take away to, to empower them. I especially enjoyed the inclusion of Manchester’s own Emmeline Pankhurst – who Kate Pankhurst discovered she is related to whilst writing the book. Kirstie Skivington spoke with a broad Mancunian accent for the role, which was a nice touch.

We’re speaking during the COP26 United Nations Climate Change Conference and Pankhurst’s latest in the series is about environmental awareness: Great Women who Saved the Planet. “I listened to Greta Thunberg’s speech, about ‘No more blah, blah, blah’ and thought why can’t we put her in charge? This is an urgent issue where we can’t wait for the next generation; it needs to be now, it needs to be our current leaders who do something and stop dragging their feet.” Emmeline (played by Frances Mayli McCann) wears a military-style tasselled outfit and performs a rap on the song “Deeds Not Words”. Sample lyrics include: “Did you hear them call women inferior? Year after year I’m growing wearier. It’s clear we don’t need their manly exteriors/It’s all hot air from their posteriors.”

While she’s in this wing of ‘Fantastically great women throughout history’ the characters reveal themselves to her and tell their stories to Jade and help her find her way.

Do you think there are comparisons between the suffragettes and today’s movements involving women e.g. WASPI women and the #MeToo movement? The Mary song is another highlight; it’s the musical’s equivalent of Six‘s ‘House of Holbein’: fun, fierce and fabulous – and feminist AF. A high voltage show with great charisma… a zippy guide to the great women of history that sets toes tapping and young minds alight – The Guardian Six The Musical is also contributing to women’s history in the theatre, but it is centred around one man and his wives, whereas this production is going across various timelines and different periods of history, including some quite recent. From explorers to artists, scientists to secret agents, hear the stories of some of history’s strongest mothers, sisters and daughters; all independent icons who really did change the world. In this second book for older readers Kate Pankhurst, tells the fascinating stories of some of history's most talented female artists. Hearing aid user?
