There's also a piece on the cast, a making of featurette about the film's numerous bloody kills, a gag reel, and more. All Roads Lead to Cokey: The Making of Cocaine Bear– Meet the hilarious ensemble brought together to bring the movie of what is soon to be the world’s most famous bear to life. Likewise, various gore effects are available for squeamish scrutiny for all they're worth. While not vast gains over the outstanding Blu-ray, the higher Cocaine Bear was produced by Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood of Lord Miller, Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman of Brownstone Productions, and Brian Duffield. That movie was Grizzly, and along with the likes of Piranha, Squirm, Empire of the Ants, Alligator and Day of the Animals (where an enraged and topless Leslie Nielsen wrestles a bear during a thunderstorm – no, really!) formed a movement of ‘nature run amok’ movies, each successive one being of a lower quality than the last, culminating in the roaring, performing rubber shark of Jaws: The Revenge in 1987. And whilst the deliberately (so they say) bad run of CGI hybrid creature features that SyFy and The Asylum brought to the public’s attention in the 2000s continues to this day, the novelty factor that made them famous has become somewhat nauseating. environment, to rip apart. The film delivers exactly what is expected of it, then: a carnival ride through the grisly world of a bear hopped up on As of this writing, I’ve been reviewing movies for nearly twenty five years. In that time I’ve seen some truly great films, some good ones, bad ones and some awful ones. So what was I to think when a movie with the title Cocaine Bear was released? My knee jerk reaction says it has “guilty pleasure” written all over it. But the film does have roots in history. Yes, the events in this film actually happened (to an extent, I’m sure a lot of creative liberties were taken). I recall an interview with director Elizabeth Banks who remarked that “…this could be a career ender.” And she’s right. But I will say that some of the more enjoyable films out there are those that poke fun at themselves and/or their genre. Yes, The Meg, Crawl and Lake Placid all share similarities to this one so if any of those were up your alley – you’ll be high on life. Cocaine Bear delivers just about everything that one would expect of a movie called Cocaine Bear: it's gory, irreverent, and Elsewhere in the woods, two kids - Dee Dee (Brooklynn Prince) and her pal Henry (Christian Convery) – have skipped school so that they could go paint. They come across the cocaine and try it out, and soon enough Dee Dee is missing and Henry is literally up a tree. Liz and a bear expert Peter (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) come across them, but it doesn’t go well. When Dee Dee’s mom , Sari (Kari Russell), realizes her daughter has skipped class, she heads out to look for her. There are brief featurettes and a “making-of” in addition to an alternate ending and over four-minutes of deleted and extended scenes that continue the insanity. The audio commentary with director Elizabeth Banks and producer Max Handelman is the key inclusion. Cocaine Bear was shot using the ARRIRAW 4.5K digital source with Arri Alexa LF and Arri signature Prime lenses. Theatrically it had a 4K digital intermediate which, while no other information could be found about what the source of this discs’ image could be, it seems reasonable to assume is the source of the 3840 x 2160p resolution image in a theatrically accurate 2.39:1 aspect ratio that also utilises 10-bit video depth, WCG and a HDR10 grade (no Dolby Vision), all of which has been encoded using the HEVC/H.265 video codec. gory moments spread out over 90 minutes. The characters are likewise uninteresting, but they are at least played with physical zeal to spare. The Doing Lines – Cast and filmmakers read lines from the script to COCAINE BEAR, which was a work of art unto itself.

Speaking of encountering the titular bear: here’s where Banks finds her biggest success. As expected, this drug-fueled ursine is not only smarter than your average bear, it also harbors the biggest cocaine habit this side of Tony Montana, and will do anything to feed that need. Anything. And really, the film only works whenever the 500-pound flimsily rendered apex predator is on the screen as it slices, dices, rips, and shreds its way through human fodder as it seeks out the next high. While genre lovers will likely wallow in the film’s gonzo attitude and style, it never comes close to being as wild and, ahem… gutsy, as it tries to be.it to play to its strengths. At about 90 minutes sans credits, it's very brisk, too, so love or hate what it does, there is no mistaking that the film is
