Tilakaratne, Wishka (28 June 2022). "Christopher Lee's Best Performances, Ranked". MovieWeb . Retrieved 27 December 2022. His roles in the films Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1968), Taste the Blood of Dracula (1969), and Scars of Dracula (1970) all gave the Count very little to do. Lee said in an interview in 2005, "all they do is write a story and try and fit the character in somewhere, which is very clear when you see the films. They gave me nothing to do! I pleaded with Hammer to let me use some of the lines that Bram Stoker had written. Occasionally, I sneaked one in." [72] He starred in two further Dracula films for Hammer in the early 1970s, both of which attempted to bring the character into the modern-day era. These were not commercially successful: Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972) and The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973). The latter film was tentatively titled Dracula Is Dead... and Well and Living in London, a parody of the stage and film musical revue Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, but Lee was not amused. Speaking at a press conference in 1973 to announce the film, Lee said, "I'm doing it under protest. I think it is fatuous. I can think of twenty adjectives – fatuous, pointless, absurd. It's not a comedy, but it's got a comic title. I don't see the point." [87] The Satanic Rites of Dracula was the last Dracula film in which Lee played the Dracula role, as he felt he had played the part too many times and that the films had deteriorated in quality. [88] Interestingly, Lee was offered the role of Grand Moff Tarkin in the very first Star Wars film. He turned it down, and the role famously went to his friend Peter Cushing. Lee would later join the Star Wars franchise when he played Count Dooku in the prequel films. Some might argue that Cushing got the better deal of the two. Lee was a fanatical golfer, but I doubt whether many of the people wanting to read his biography (presumably on the basis of his amazing film legacy) really appreciate the amount of detail devoted to this aspect of his leisure. Yet fascinating aspects of his life - particularly those whom he knew socially outside the acting circuit due to his family's and other social connections (such as the oil billionaire Paul Getty) are almost glossed over. I read this book in many short spurts over several months. It was a greater effort than I typically am willing to invest, but having vowed to finish a book once started, I did.

I made a policy of accepting one-off TV roles, but declining episodic TV and sitcoms. Seemingly you must decide whether you are a movie or a TV actor, and never the twain shall meet except on special occasions.” He would have been a great lead in today’s new streaming era over network only television.Lee took his ancient royal roots seriously, especially when it came to his entry into metal music. His third foray into the genre—which was also his first full metal album—was titled Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross. It told the story of Charlemagne, with Lee playing his ancestor in both the songs and a music video that was shot for one of the songs. a b c "Extensive biography at Tiscali UK". Tiscali. [71] Like other students at Rank's " Charm School," Lee had difficulty finding work. [73] He finally made his film début in 1947, in Terence Young's Gothic romance Corridor of Mirrors. [74] He played Charles; the director got around his height by placing him at a table in a nightclub alongside Lois Maxwell, Mavis Villiers, Hugh Latimer and John Penrose. Known as an actor with a deep, strong voice, Lee also sang, recorded opera and musical pieces between 1986 and 1998, and the symphonic metal album Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross in 2010, after having worked with several metal bands since 2005. The heavy metal follow-up Charlemagne: The Omens of Death was released in 2013 on Lee's 91st birthday. He was honoured with the "Spirit of Hammer" award at the 2010 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards ceremony. Autobiographies. These things can sell like hotcakes or languish on the shelves of your local Poundland, gathering dust. Surely there are two determining factors when it comes to sales figures for these books: the popularity of the subject and crucially, whether they have anything to say for themselves. Sir Christopher Frank Carandini Lee CBE CStJ meets both criteria effortlessly; and at 6'4" with dark features and a deep, strong voice, Lee was tailormade for villainous roles; a mantle he has worn with great success over his lengthy film career: Scaramanga, Count Dooku, Frankenstein's Monster, Saruman, Fu Manchu, Lord Summerisle and of course, Count Dracula. I think that part of the problem is that Lee was probably given too much editorial control over the ghost writer, and that - being very old when this was written - the writing style is dated and the selection of what to focus on is odd. Retrieved 15 November 2020.This book helped me realize that, generally speaking, I like biographies more than auto-biographies. When a person writes about their own life, they naturally re-live their memories. That's cool for them, but not necessarily for us. Perhaps these memories and references may have more meaning to my friends that grew up in England. I didn't know about Christopher Lee until he played the wizard Saruman in the "Lord of the Rings" movies. I did learn a few things that interested me, because I had some commonality.....that Lee was an avid golfer, and that he had a long friendship with the boxer Muhammad Ali. a b Walker, Tim (31 May 2006). [66] [67] Lee's stepfather served as a captain in the Intelligence Corps, but it is unlikely he had any influence over Lee's military career. Lee saw his stepfather for the last time on a bus in London in 1940, after he was divorced from Lee's mother, and Lee did not speak to him. [68] Career [ edit ] 1947–1957: Career beginnings [ edit ]
